You must be using defective routers because the WRT54G and WRT54GL are the wifi routers that I use for a large portion of my small business customers with 5+ pc's.
While the WRT54 v 1- 4 and the WRT54L are very good Routers.

It is a different story with the WRT54 v5-7. Yeah the plastic box and the model number is the same.

However the firmware was change to propriety one, and the memory was reduced.

If one realy want to go with Linksys and has a Google checkout discoubt, the OP deal is a good deal.

I have a couple of these flashed with DD-WRT just for home use. Not to threadjack, but any advice on a site with good info on setting up a hotspot? My sister has a small motel (w/small budget) that I promised I?d help her with some sort of setup for her guests. I consider myself computer savy but get lost with linux and things like talk of radius servers. I think I can do it, but need someplace to start.

Delbert, it is Not a simple affair.

Yeah you can install few Access Points, and split the Internet. However, since it is going to be used by guests it can end-up with legal and liability issues that can get your sister into messy situations.

Therefore, the best is to install special wireless appliances that take care of log in and some legal procedures.

Google for Internet café Wireless hardware and you would find few reasonable solutions.

Well, they wouldn't change the shipping for me after the fact.(even though it was only minutes after)

And they said it was too late to cancel the order,

But they did give me other options like refusing the shipment, or getting an RMA and possibly getting the shipping refunded.

However, It was My mistake ... And IT arrived Today.. 🙂

Now to figure out how to flash it.. 😀

Raise your hand if you sometimes find yourself checking the serials on the linksys boxes whenever you go to a retailer that sells them.

how do you know which version it is based on the serial?

Here's a list:

List of Hardware version and serial numbers for Linksys WRT54G

A slightly more complete list:
Which WRT54G/GS/GL do I have?

I have not come across anything but the newer/inferior versions for a long time now. When I did it was typically some officemax, radioshack or staples that was off the beaten path. That?s why this GL version in the OP was such a good deal.

Has anyone received any info on their rebate yet??

I mailed mine the first week of January, and their site says "Submission not found" 🙁

Me and my 3 roomates have used this router for many months now with no issues. Newsgroups, bit torrent, WoW, misc online gaming, regular HTTP, Dynamic DNS, FTP server - all with out a problem... once we got QoS configured properly (which is a PITA). Considering all we're doing, any router not running DD-WRT just would not be acceptable.

Another HUGE feature that can be overlooked for larger setups is linking two routers wirelessly with a bridge. Upgrade the antennas and you can have a great multi-building network.

I would not worry for another 3 weeks.
