I said they were told they didn't qualify. Someone else said that furloughed employees do qualify for unemployment and I said I'd tell them to double check on it.

I'm concerned that 6601 allows the penalties to accumulate. This might be a case of "can't collect yet" instead of can't collect but you are right this particular penalty is currently exempt from regular IRS collective actions.

At this point the budget negotiations have degenerated to nothing more than a face saving effort not to give into the other side. But like the sequester fight, the current status quo actually works against Obama. The GOP wants lower spending, the sequester gave it to them earlier and the shutdown is giving it to them now. To get increased spending (or at least not shutdown level spending) Obama is the one who needs to take action. So I hope this shutdown goes on for as long as possible - Obama is effectively on the side of lowered spending for as long as this goes on.

Um, except it cost MORE money to run things this way, as you had extra costs to ramp down (and eventually ramp back up) the furloughed workers. Not to mention that the politicians will feel guilty, and back-pay them (so no savings there).

And then there's the bad attitudes you're building up with this, which will have an effect as well, though it's nothing you could measure, until after the fact. Federal workers are tired of being the politician's whipping boys, and being punished for doing nothing wrong. Karma's a real bitch, ya know??

I don't like admitting error any more than you do, but if I get something wrong, I admit it and move on. That's how one advances discussion. A difference between us is that I try to be sure I know what I'm talking about before I open my mouth. You just blurt out your assumptions and party talking points without bothering to validate them ... and then you dig in your heels once shown your error.

I wonder if this is why Boehner went along with them. When things fall apart the blame can be placed on the Tea party and hopefully they can be eliminated in the primaries in 2014. If somehow things work out, he's the guy that helped. Either way I think he's done with Speaker role.

We have a process for reforming government and laws in this country. It's called getting your candidates elected, getting bills passed in the house/senate, and finally getting them signed into law by your president.

What's going on now is a subversion of everything we know. A minority party attempting to shutdown the government in an attempt to extort political ransom.

No, no, no. This is unacceptable. It doesn't matter what stripes you are, this is absolutely un-American and threatens the health of our democracy. The President must stand firm and refuse to negotiate one iota with these political terrorists.

If Congress can't exercise it's Constitutional power to set the budget and approve spending money or refuse to spend on something, then there's no point in a representive government. We'll just let the President dictate how much we spend and send Congress home.

Congress has already authorized spending in perpetuity for the ACA. If Congress would like to revisit this decision it is free to do so.

There is seriously almost no funding for the ACA present in the discretionary budget. Republicans in the House are attempting to stop the function of government in order to remove funding from a program not under consideration. If we allow such a small minority of government to unilaterally force changes to settled law based on such threat you're absolutely right, there's no point in a representative government.

I'm glad we're finally getting to the heart of the matter here though. You think that if 53% of 33% of the elected branches of government can't force the passage of a new law through threats of economic catastrophe that we don't have a representative democracy. I'd say that if they can't do that it's a great sign that we DO have a representative democracy.

And I'm sure you've been just as livid about the Democrats spending the last three years refusing to participate in that process and thereby forcing the Republicans to either pass continuing resolution after continuing resolution or else shut down the government, right?
