A lot of forums have this where you can like, thank, +rep, etc, someone's post. I find that it makes forums a lot more fun since it's a simple way to give feedback when you don't feel like replying. It makes so many of those non-reply posts you make feel so much more worth it.
 
Imagine it to be like the polls in ATOT.
Some people answer truthfully, some answer the complete opposite of what the truth would be and some choose an option at random.
Things here don't work the way they should because people like to mess things up.
In other words, it wouldn't help in the ways you described in your OP, and to moderate it would just be more work.

It might not work in the social forums, but I think it would be a great feature in the other forums if implemented in a similar fashion to what Microsoft and other forums have done.

It's nice to hit a topic and see the "correct/best" answer right off the bat instead of having to read through hundreds of responses. The OP having the ability to mark responses as 'helpful' and 'answer' would be very useful to others who found the topic through a search on the site or a search engine. Also, showing how many posts people have had marked with 'helpful' and 'answer' under their avatar would let others know that the posters answers have been useful to others. This would be much useful than displaying the number of posts which does nothing more than promote neffing.

Best option would be to have it as a feature that the OP adds to the thread. Don't make it available in the social forums if at all possible.

Unfortunately, suggestions that have been tried before but failed because they were implemented in a non-ideal manner tend to be passed on <cough>Enterprise IT Forum<cough>.

The polls are fairly representative of the views of ATOT. It's only ridiculous when the OP asks for it. Most people answer truthfully. And these likes won't be anonymous either so it's quite clear who's messing around.
 
So was the like/thanks feature ever tried? Are you referring to the thread star rating? I can see why that doesn't work, but the like/thanks feature should work completely differently. The thread star rating is hidden on the top corner. The thanks system is plainly visible on the bottom of every post. Not to mention that it works for responses and not just for the thread.
 
There are people who had ratings in the negative 10's of thousands... yet were some of the most well liked posters around here.

It doesn't work that way.
 
User ratings work a helluva lot differently than a like feature. In fact, out of all the boards i've ever been on that had it, I've never really seen any of it abused. The posts that hit the mark get lots of likes and the ones that don't.... don't.

I want to bring this idea back up.

We don't need the ability to down-vote; just up-vote. A thumbs-up that reveals who gave the thumbs-up would help me end threads where' i'm wrong by up-voting the person that was right without the need to respond verbally (which tends to lead more to a counter-argument than an acceptance like a thumbs-up or +1 does)

The like feature, and that sort are the dumbest thing to ever hit the internet.

I've been on forums (www.gamedev.net) which had the feature years ago, and if you asked a question, you'd get voted down. If you answered a question, you'd get voted down. If you said something like "user xyz (who was popular on the forum) is awesome" you'd get voted up so much that you'd hit the max score in 1 hour.

I quit visiting the site because of that type of garbage. It was a game programming website, not 4chan.

I understand, which is why I'm suggesting that we not have a "down" vote; but only an up-vote.

It's not nearly that bad on reddit. :whiste:
If you asked a good question on there, you'd get voted up. Ask a bad question, voted down.
