Imagine it to be like the polls in ATOT.
Some people answer truthfully, some answer the complete opposite of what the truth would be and some choose an option at random.
Things here don't work the way they should because people like to mess things up.
In other words, it wouldn't help in the ways you described in your OP, and to moderate it would just be more work.

Aw c'mon... there's so much hate on here. I think the like feature is such an easy way to spread the love.
+1I want to bring this idea back up.
We don't need the ability to down-vote; just up-vote. A thumbs-up that reveals who gave the thumbs-up would help me end threads where' i'm wrong by up-voting the person that was right without the need to respond verbally (which tends to lead more to a counter-argument than an acceptance like a thumbs-up or +1 does)
I understand, which is why I'm suggesting that we not have a "down" vote; but only an up-vote.The like feature, and that sort are the dumbest thing to ever hit the internet.
I've been on forums (www.gamedev.net) which had the feature years ago, and if you asked a question, you'd get voted down. If you answered a question, you'd get voted down. If you said something like "user xyz (who was popular on the forum) is awesome" you'd get voted up so much that you'd hit the max score in 1 hour.
I quit visiting the site because of that type of garbage. It was a game programming website, not 4chan.
