We had a horrible storm last night and one of the strikes sounded like a cannon right outside my window. When I went out to check my flowers this morning I saw the damage. :(

Tree

Will this tree die? Some tell me it will die in a year or two and others say no. I hope it doesn't. :( -M

won't kill it, might loose some foliage, but the damage looks superficial.....even though the most important part of the tree is it's outer skin, it looks like enough of it was untouched.

if the bark was gone around the tree it would die since bark (actually the cambium layer) is how nutrients are carried up the tree from the roots but i would say this tree will live.

Pines usuall die after this kind of strike, the needles will brown out as it dies, watch it for the next 6 months to a year.
It's the ground path that the electricity took, and it boils out the water where it ran down through the bark.
Water Oaks do survive the streak.

I can show you several dead pines in the area around where we used to live in Orlando (Casselberry) where pines were snuffed that way -
it takes about 5 years before the dead stick falls down.

I will probably be OK, but you need to watch it as it is now open and prone to sap suckers and other ailments.
