I'm looking at getting a powertower/heavy bag stand: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Everlast-H...Stand/17747647

The girl I've started dating mentioned wanting to box a bit (she's done a bit of karete, too), and I had fun with a heavy bag at an old apartment. I was also looking at getting a power tower, so this seems like a good option.

I'm 5'9" 159 lbs at last weighing.
She's 4'11" and around 100 lbs (I think, I haven't actually asked her for her weight, lol).

Is there a size bag that would fit both of us? Would a 40 lb one be too light for me? Would a 50 or 60 lb one be too big for her?

A Everlast 100lbs C3 Foam would be a good compromise between your needs and her's. Being hung from a stand, the weight will add to stability. Which depending on how hard you hit, will require less, or even no weights, on the base. The design will compensate for your height difference. One of the issues you would face down the road is the contents settling and her having a far harder surface to strike than you. The C3 should eliminate that issue, since it will retain its shape, and has an added cushioned striking surface. One of the girls I coach is almost as small as your's - 5'1" 115lbs and she does fine on a 100lbs Title.

If you need recommendations on wraps and gloves, just let me know.

Man, I wish you had posted this earlier. I ended up getting a Century MMA 70-lb Training Bag. Do you think that will be too light for me and make the stand unstable? The user reviews for the stand seemed to indicate that the 100 lb bags required weights for stability, while the 70 lb bags. Maybe I can cancel it and get an everlast...

I bought these gloves in 14 oz: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Everlast-P...ndingMethod=rr

Should I wrap up my hands before a ~20 minute session?

I'd say yeah. If you're gonna put on the gloves and punch stuff, wrap your hands/wrists. It's to help reduce risk of injury ranging from blisters to fractures, and it doesn't take that long to do.

Wraps are obviously to help protect your hands and wrists from injury. And wearing protective equipment is always advisable. You may find the gloves do not fit correctly without them as well. Every boxing gym I have ever been in, everyone wears wraps. mexican style are great

As to the bag, I can tell you from almost 34 years of experience, that Century has always sucked. Be it Gis, gloves, pads, or what have you, they have always been near bottom of the barrel. Spend the extra for quality, it will be money well spent.

Weight I think I best not make any more comments on. As I have very little experience with stands like that, and lighter may well be better for them. Gloves look good. I have the Everlast 7oz MMA trainers with EverFresh and it is working so far. Not nearly as gamey as gloves usually are by this point in their lives.
