SC man gets life sentence for $10 crack deal

GAFFNEY, SC (AP) - A 28-year-old Cherokee County man who sold $10 worth of crack to an undercover informant has been sentenced to life in prison without parole under the state's repeat offender law.
Prosecutors say James R. Byers Jr. was sentenced Wednesday after he was convicted of third offense distribution of crack cocaine and distribution of crack cocaine within a half mile of a school or park.
Byers' prior criminal record includes five drug convictions.
Prosecutors say Byers' sold the crack to an informant in August 2009 near an elementary school. Cherokee County sheriff's deputies videotaped the transaction.

I think drug penalties in general are stiff, but repeat offenders deserve what they get, like this guy.

Good. This is the way it's SUPPOSED to be for habitual criminals.

I'd personally vote for "Three Strikes, You're Dead," but there are too fucking many bleeding-heart liberals in this country that would prevent such a thing.

Do murderers get a "One Strike, You're Dead" to go along with this Chinese influenced punishment?

You have to keep in mind, that a lot of those stories about life without parole for a $10 rock are drug dealers pleading to lesser offenses. In reality their offense is much heavier.

Y'know...that's a pretty good idea...but would depend entirely on the circumstance of said murder.

Pre-meditated murder, murder for hire, (including the hiring of murderer) other "cold-blooded" murder, including murder in the commission of a felony...then yes, Spark them up.

"Murder in the heat of passion," which is what MOST murders are, not necessarily.

That would be quite the crime deterrent. :awe:

Yeah, I'm sure he just sold that one.

I was thinking the same thing.

I am sure the other two times were all a misunderstanding, too.

I have no sympathy for people who get caught by three strike laws. It is not like they do not get a fair warning.

Unfortunately for the taxpayers, he will probably live a longer life in prison than he would have on the street.

Your platform is falling apart.

I'm voting for Dole.

We really should make it 5 strikes since we all know police can't be trusted 100% of the time.

I'm pretty sure the goal here is to keep us safe, not save us money.

Did they not teach that in law school? 🙄

Hell, I'm also in favor of using the death penalty for corrupt politicians and government employees too...

Get caught in a bribery scandal? "Off with his head!"

(in case you can't tell, I favor victim's rights far more than criminal's rights...the death penalty doesn't need to be 100% "pain-free" to avoid the constitutional requirement of "cruel and unusual punishment."

Hangings, electrocution, gas chamber, firing squad...all are fine as long as they're done right...and the person dies relatively fast.

I can see it for violent criminals, but we are spending too much cash (and wasting much needed prison beds) locking up drug offenders, and not enough for the hardcore offenders, such as murderers, rapists & predators of children.

Legalizing marijuana, sell & tax it (and pay down the national debt at the same time), and send hardcore drug users/sellers to REHAB, would be a better solution. Prohibition never has worked, and our "war on drugs" has failed miserably.

Life for a $10 rock is outrageous, no matter how you see it.

Now if you ran for office with "One Strike, Your Dead" for politicians and government officials, who wouldn't vote for you?!?!?

Why dont they take some of that money they are going to spend keeping him in prison for 30+ years and rehabilitate him so he can become a productive member of society?

I really do vote for this. As much fun as it is to fry this guy with the book, we are also hurting ourselves, just too stupid to realize it.
