I keep hearing that in these discussions. Also
"retarded fu@king liberals," "piece of shit liberals," etc.

I fully support everyone's right to their opinion.

I so far haven't heard this kind of vitriol going the other way though (no "retarded fu@king conservative" comments).

Does the name calling help to make a point? By being so emphatic about disparaging another's beliefs rather than using that space to more fully make one's own point I think hurts an argument.

To me it takes the thrust away from the rest of what's said.

What do you think?

Edit: I'm as liberal as they come.

Liberals, with their promotion of the nanny welfare state, are trying their best to create the Idiocracy future.

No B is better than A!

Are insults the best way to make an argument

Sometimes. It depends on the maturity of the audience.

In politics the line is the maturity level of the average American- so hell yeah it pays off.

Probably doesn't fly so well when it comes to elections for the board of trustees at a local opera house.

Are insults the best way to make an argument is what I meant for this to be about, not necessarily P&N.

This is not a legitimate question from anyone with an IQ above 50. Since you're obviously of at least average intelligence (and therefore have an IQ well in excess of 50), I will have to assume that the question is not sincere and that you're simply trolling.

Conservatives vote their hatreds and fears ahead of their own interests.
Liberals vote because, like, you know, it's fun to vote.

Agree with this. Throw in television influence, which is excessively dramatic in reporting "news", and it is quite common indeed.

I remember one now that exemplifies your point. "butt-hurting liberal".

I'm fairly new to this forum and only really participated in tech stuff before, so I haven't really heard this much name calling since the schoolyard.

When vocal people learn they can't swing everyone to their point of view, they fall back on the grade-school tested tactic of calling names.

It's so unfair that everyone doesn't think like they do, what else are they to do? Think of a different way to explain themselves? Nope, too much work, off the hip opinions are better.

What I like is the documentary "Outfoxed" where they show 2-3 good looking Republican/Conservatives and they call in a shrimpy looking democrat to the commentary who can't get a word in and gets walked all over.

I don't particularly like the word "Liberal" because it almost sounds more to the left than I am... I'm a gun-owning democrat who doesn't care for careless government spending, but wants the government to help control health care costs while cutting off those who abuse the system by blackballing them from as many government benefits as possible once they get found cheating the system.....ohh and "Yay Military!".....tax the uber rich.

(Liberal bias warning) - I think ATOT and tech forums skew weirdly conservative... I've never been able to piece together why but just think of who nerds are (I'm more of a geek, I like tech and find it a fun diversion but enjoy many things equally or more, and never get into tech arguments..Movies or music, however...) - I know I'm talking in stereotypes but forum dwellers sometimes are virginal, bullied or most likely ignored in the real world, humorless, and take every opportunity to raise their voices the only place their opinion sorta matters.

It's not conservative vs. liberal to me, it's basement dweller vs. casual fan. The basement dwellers have some serious issues and don't think of people as well.. People.. They think of them as soulless avatars, worthy of being called a "dumb shit" for disagreeing with an opinion. As for intelligence, there are numerous studies that show liberal vs. conservative raw intelligence, and I'm guessing I'll just be called a fucking idiot or the testers communist/socialist if I post any.. So I won't bother. Empathy has been shown as an indicator of intelligence, if you use terms like "nanny state" or complain about poor black mothers destroying our economy (without taking the time to really see the big picture or ask the right questions), I can't honestly say empathy's high on your list of priorities.

Have you missed every debate on Gay Marriage and Trayvon Martin where liberals constantly call people who disagree with them racists or bigots?

In fact it is their primary argument.
