The day has come and LG will be making its new flagship smartphone official. The event will be held in New York, but you don't have to leave your comfy chair to enjoy it.
We've embedded the video stream below so you can watch the whole thing unfold right here.

LG didn't make a good job keep the G2 a secret. We already know how it looks like, its specs and LG's plans for a global rollout.
In case you need a refresh, the LG G2 will supposedly pack a 5.2" 1080p display, Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2GB RAM, Android 4.2.2 and a 13MP OIS camera. It is also said to use nano-SIM cards. We'll know if those rumors were true by the time the event finishes.

Update 2: LG will no longer use the "Optimus" nomenclature for its flagship smartphone lineup. So LG's new flagship smartphone will be called the LG G2.

The LG G2 is the first smartphone to sport the Snapdragon 800 CPU and Nano-SIM based on nanotechnology.

The design really beats the Galaxy S4 here even though I like Samsung products. The minimalistic design and relatively non-existent bezel really makes the 5.2 inch IPS display stand out.

***Update on the display:

Is this the LG G2's display? 5.2 inches, 2.2mm thickness, sounds like it!

Brightness of 535 nits? That's even brighter than the iPhone 5's display!

Shut up and take my money LG!

Confirmed display info:
  • LG claims this is the "world's slimmest full HD panel for smartphones"
  • Optical Clear Resin Technology - this exists between the panel and touch film which allows for increased brightness (535 nits!)
  • Intertek's testing confirms a contrast ratio of 3.74:1 based on 10,000 lux, which LG says "will perform well even in strong outdoor sunlight conditions"

LG Display shows off 2.2mm thick 'world's slimmest' 1080p LCD for smartphones

As smartphones continue to get thinner and thinner, LG Display is continually doing its part to shave off a few millimeters. Its latest introduction is this "world's slimmest full HD panel for smartphones", measuring at 5.2-inches diagonally, it's just 2.2mm thick and has a 2.3mm bezel. To get there, LG's display arm has pioneered new technology including "Advanced One-Glass-Solution" that puts dual flexible circuits between the panel and touch film, with 30 percent fewer lines on the panel. It also points out that every one of its pixels consists of RGB subpixels -- more shots fired at pentile screens -- and that it's capable of 535 nits of brightness, more than all current 1080p mobile LCDs. That should be an improvement over the Zerogap Touch technology it was so proud of in the original Optimus G and hey, look at that -- it's arriving just in time for the G2.

The back looks like it's made of sturdier polycarbonate than the Galaxy S4. There is speculation that the back cover may be removable and will feature microSD expansion.

But the biggest news is that the LG G2 may support a 16MP sensor. That is a huge amount of resolution and even beats a significant amount of point and shooters on the market. Not really sure if this equates to better photo quality, but we'll find out when the first line of reviews start rolling out.

LG Optimus G2 leaks out in clear photos and video footage

The LG Optimus G2 made yet another pre-announcement appearance. This time around however, the upcoming Android powerhouse emerged in a number of clear photos and video footage - not the blurry images from times past.

Looks nice. Is LG slated to be making the next Nexus device too? Nexus 5?

I'll definitely wait to see actual images. 16MP means nothing to me if the pics are noisy crap from such a dense sensor.

This is the best looking so far in 2013.
This phone has absolutely no bezel.
Kudos to LG for trying something new with all the buttons on the back.
(Don't know how well it will work till we try it).
Yeah it looks a lot like the GS4 but its prettier.

Hope Verizon gets this by the end of the year, my sprint contract is up soon and would like to hop over.

And this looks like a kickass phone, hopefully the battery is large.

it is incredible how thin they've made this phone. i love it!
seems moving buttons to the back is the only solution to such a thin phone. very smart!

The bezel reduction is nice, but I still think the rounded corners and concave back is unappealing. Maybe I just prefer rectangles.

IMO it doesn't look that thin either. The edges are, but I think the center of the phone looks pretty thick in the third picture, could be the gloss playing tricks though.

16MP is going to be terrible, especially if it's still 1/3.0". The Titan 2 tried it already and it sucked horribly.

Not liking the glossy finish either, LG needs to stop playing follow the leader and put a matte finish on their phones.

I find that the design is somewhat flawed. A sharper edge is much harder to hold than a conventional flat angled design. This was one of the problems I had with my iPod Touch 4th Gen but the screen and form factor itself was small enough for me to palm it in one hand. I doubt I could do the same with a 5.2" screen as my 4.7" Nexus 4 is at the tipping point of palm-able size and shape.

The narrow bezel will make it easier for accidental presses on the edge of the touch screen in a single handed operation. I'll give credit to LG for making it look better than Samsung S4 but volume and power side buttons are doable(iPod Touch 4 has them). I think its more of a design choice to be different.

Are there any dimensions yet, is it bigger than a Nexus 4? I hope the N5 isn't bigger than the 4.

The screen itself should be roughly 4.4" x 2.75", so once you add the bezel (or lack thereof) onto that, it will probably be something like 5.2" x 2.9". No idea how thick it will be, and it's somewhat difficult to tell with the curved back.

Imagine a slimmed down Galaxy Note, and I think that would be a reasonable approximation.

Any particular reason why? They've been making fairly decent phones recently, although some of their previous models were rather crap or uninteresting.

There's your answer. I had an LG chocolate phone and liked it, the Prada was decent as it was the first phone with a capacitive touchscreen but the software was crap and unpolished like the iPhone. Nexus 4 seems pretty good but the battery life is just horrible. I wouldn't write off LG just yet, I think they can rebound as they have a lot of resources being a Korean chaebol.

If it weren't made by LG I'd be interested.

In the Android world, anything other than Samsung will have rather poor-mediocre developer support.

It's just how the market works, sadly.

At least this LG smartphone will have the most recent Android version at launch. LG has been slack with their updates. I hope they change their stance to Android updates.

However rumors of the LG G2 being the Nexus 5 is now being revived. There's a high chance that the next Nexus device will be made by LG.

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/07/10/nexus-5-android-5-0-launch/

Nexus 5 Launch Rumored for October with Android 5.0

While the Nexus 5 release is still likely months away, rumors continue to pop up with the latest suggesting that LG, the maker of the Nexus 4, is developing the Nexus 5 alongside the LG Optimus G2 and will be introduced sometime in October along with Google’s brand new Android operating system, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

In November, LG and Google released the Nexus 4, a device based in part on the LG Optimus G, another LG-made smartphone that made its way to AT&T and Sprint. That device continues to rank among the best Android phones on the market and there is no sign that Google is looking to replace it any time soon. Instead, rumors have pointed to a Nexus smartphone launch much later in the year, likely alongside a new, major update to the Android operating system.

So far, rumors have focused on LG as the manufacturer of the new 2013 Nexus, a device that is presumed to be called the Nexus 5. And while LG has not outright confirmed that it will be developing the new Nexus smartphone with Google, rumors, recent ones even, say otherwise.

A new report from Korean publication Daum suggests that LG is developing the Nexus 5 alongside the heavily rumored LG Optimus G2, the latter of which has leaked out numerous times and is all but confirmed for a launch in August.

Evidently, the device is slated for arrival sometime in October, the same month that Google announced the Nexus 4, and it will be equipped with the new Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie that was originally rumored for Google I/O 2013 but will likely be preceded by Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Furthermore, the report claims that the Nexus 5 will use the same specifications as the LG Optimus G2 which would mean a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, a display somewhere around 5-inches, 2-33GB of RAM, and a 13MP camera. LG and Google could certainly tweak both the specs and the design, the Nexus 4 did not share a design with the Optimus G, though that remains to be seen.

So while the Nexus 5 likely won’t be coming until far later this year, it’s looking increasingly likely that LG is going to be manufacturing it once again.

It's good that LG is the manufacturer of the Nexus 5 because I loved the build quality on both the LG Optimus G and the Nexus 4.

lol, what? exynos based samsungs have some of the worst support around.

Except that changed after the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Exynos variants of the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 are rarely found in the US and most western countries.

In Korea, Exynos variants have the most developer support, because *surprise, surprise*, that is the most common variant of Samsung smartphones in that market.

Whatever is big in a specific market will always get the most support.

Overall, Samsung smartphones have the best developer support in the Android world this year and this trend will definitely continue.

That shiny plastic back will be covered with either a TPU case or an Otterbox.

I never cover my phone with a case.

I don't really mind plastic though.

Don't really know what the huge deal is, really, and I think it's more fanboyism which is annoying to say the least.

Brand loyalty is nonsense. I used to be an Apple fanboy then a Samsung fanboy... now I just buy whatever technology is the best.
