Recently, I found that one of my burners would not eject half the time, so I found myself spending a couple of hours online hunting a reliable, speedy drive. I was very surprised to also find that one of the best drives I found was also very inexpensive. (not the cheapest - I did find another for about $26, shipped, but it got bad reviews) Since I was able to get 3 for under $100, and I have 3 computers, I just took the plunge and upgraded all of them with these.

Right now, they are priced at $28.99 each, so total for 3 would be $96.51, including shipping (no tax here)

specs:

LG Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE Super-Multi DVD Burner

Model #: GSAH42N

It's a fairly new model, but it has gotten great reviews online:

1 Year Warranty

Probably the best feature is the drive's ability to burn dual layer media at 10X! With the price of Dual Layer media finally dropping down under $1 a disk, I'll finally start using it. - at least until HD DVD burners finally come down under $100! I think that's at least a couple of years off, though.

Note: it really is a 10X DL burner. I've had a couple people ask me where I got that. Newegg actually lists it as an 8X DL burner, but the online test results I've read have all said it does 10X.

Should be a really solid deal. I wonder why the heck no dvd burners are SATA yet? Is there any specific reason for this?

What? No Lite-On makes some, as well as Plextor, and i think Sony and a few others.

Sorry hehe I meant to say why don't more of them come like that. Seems like they'd most all be available in either.

The reason why most DVD burners are still IDE is because 3/4 of the computers out there have exclusively IDE hookups. Only 1/4 of them have SATA, and most of those ALSO have IDE.

So if almost 100% of the computers out there can use an IDE drive, 25% of them can use either, which one would you make as a manufacturer?

If, in 18 to 24 months, the next generation of SATA really shows a benefit, and as the SATA enabled PC's achieve market penetration, we will see more and more places making SATA drives. Eventually, it will reach a tipping point. By 2009, I doubt that you would see many IDE drives being sold in retail channels. Even the big stores would probably only have one model of hard drive and optical drive, for older PC's.

A lot of the new Dells as well as many of the socket 775 chipsets are reducing or eliminating IDE ports, so the issue is finally being forced.

After installing the drive and trying it out with DVD Decrypter, I am rather disappointed. It ripped a TV DVD with 3 hours of TV on it in 19 minutes. This is over 2 minutes longer than my 3 and a half year old BenQ 4X DVD burner.

I had assumed that the newer drives would be faster, not slower.
