Big difference. Did you even watch the video? "Free" for schools in need aka not many schools qualify for the free option so you're basically funding a start up business. 🙄

And? Perhaps it's a startup that I'd like to help "kickstart"? That's doing something I admire and want to support? ZOMG IT CAN'T BE!!!! 🙄

I assure you if you were starting a small business you'd go to kickstarter too if you could, like thousands have already successfully done. It's a lot nicer to work off the honor system then to deal with Vulture Capitalists or hope to win an SBIR.

Practically every kickstarter project that produces a product is a "small business". If you have some misguided notion that helping fund a startup is inherently a bad thing or waste of money, well you're welcome to shove that stick up your ass. In the meantime I'll get a nice feeling from supporting a good cause when my Reading Rainbow Mug arrives.

With these Kickstarter things, is there a way to waive the "gifts" and just give the money flat-out? Example: I wouldn't need a mug or bumper sticker or that sort of stuff. I'd rather that money go to the project that needs it.

Yes, you can donate to the cause without selecting a reward.
 
I put in $50. Was going to do a little less until I saw the T-Shirt offer at $50 and knew my wife would love that at least.

The "free" schools are the ones that need this the most (inner city, lower income). So those of us that donated are helping get this program into these distressed schools.

On a side note I asked my wife if she remembers reading rainbow and my 6 your old chimed in that they use it every week in class and it is one of her favorite activities.

That right there makes me feel good about donating the $25.
 
Seth MacFarlane just said he will donate dollar for dollar up to $1mm from now until the end of the Kickstarter funding (5 more days).

So those of you who haven't donated, now is the time.
