It could just as easily be a notification of a mistake. Had that happen a while ago regarding some reported income I was unaware of. It's a form you fill out along with your payment.

Ha I just opened it. It says I owe $201 from a 2005 tax return. And that I have until Aug 12th to pay it. Figures the gov't gets their money one way or the other...

Can't we just point to Tim Geithner and claim we don't have to pay taxes?

Call up the IRS, blame the inconsistency on Turbo Tax, you should be off the hook.

Ouch. The statute is 3 years. They must have JUST squeaked it in under the line. You got reamed.

Really? You guys are lucky, it's 7 years up here.

In the US it's 3 years for an error, 6 years for an error >25%, and indefinite for fraud.
Statute runs from the date the return was filed or the due date, whichever is later.

Evidently this rule only applies to anyone nominated by obama.

NYS audited me for 2006 as it was the first year i didn't pay NYS tax because i became a MA resident. The letter they sent was thick and demanded 500$ most of which was late fees, penalties etc. I sent them my full year resident MA tax return for that year and proof of residence, so far they seem to be off my back.
