My GF said I just got a letter from the mailman from the IRS and its a bit on the thick side. Do Audit notices usually come like that :-(

Oh wait, this is an actual thread. Sorry 'bout that.

I've never received anything from the IRS, but a thick package means you're good for porn.

Did it come registered or did she have to sign for it? if you did then its important and you owe money if not then its something like you forgot a form or didnt sign something etc.

I'm at work my GF is at home, but she doesn't want to open it and I was just curious if audits usually come this way...

My dad was audited once. The very first notice was a simple 2-page letter explaining that he's being audited. Subsequent things in the mail on this matter came in giant envelopes and weighed about 182 lbs. each.

This was 5 years ago.

i don't remember if my audit was certified or not but it was kinda thick. if it is, get ready for the reaming of your life.

My GF got one too. In her case, she accidently didn't include one form. The IRS sent back her original signed 1040, included explanations of what they thought went wrong (which were not what really happened) and forms to fill out to correct the error. My GF just attached the missing form and sent it right back to them. Hopefully, problem solved.

GFs audit notice was in a regular sized envelope, not certified, that was pretty thick. Anything from the IRS and thick = not good at all.

Figures and I'm the type of guy who keeps no records or receipts. If it is an audit I hope they have a payment plan because I've got no money, its pretty much paycheck to paycheck for me right now, no savings either. Can they touch your 401K? This is of course assuming its an audit...

The IRS has no sympathy, but if you provide your address, I'll have sex with your girlfriend while you are away.

You should be able to do a payment plan but their interest rates are pretty high and they are not forgiving to anyone. First they'll penalize you approx $500 for improper filing or lack there of and then start with the actual reaming process which involves you providing them proper substantiation on items they 'conveniently' find questionable..and there's nothing you can do but oblige because each time you appeal there's a few month long waiting period and during that waiting period, they'll slap on more interest - compounding with the balance. Screwed me up to the point where I had to get a high paying job. In that sense it helped me straighten up my life up but I was literally in tears until then. Hopefully it's just a friendly letter. I wouldn't wish an IRS audit on anyone.

Unless your refund is coming to you as CASH BABY!!!!!

That sounds like an audit, but it usually is over some singular issue which they're asking for clarification over. Chances are they're not sitting down to go over all of your return(s) unless there is something glaring.

You didn't deposit $100,000 of cash into the bank, did you?
