None the less I am EXTREMELY disappointed at how truly bad this macworld was.

At the very least, I was really hoping for a Mini update. Oh well, more Hackintoshes :p
I just wanted something G200 based in a Mac so that I can use something faster than an 8800GTX in a Hackintosh.:(

FWIW, the 9800GTX works...
I know, but it's no faster than an 8800GTX. Basically the fastest card a Hack can support is two and a half years old.

I believe that Steve is sick, they decided to do some interim releases to tide people over.. and they'll be back with a bang next month, or March.

That sounds about right.

Yes, but that is the thing...Steve released the letter correct? Not Apple. If that is the case then Apple would be in the clear. I suppose shareholders could go after Steve, he is worth a lot, however, if his financial advisors are worth a grain of salt he has already set up his finances in such a way as to be protected from any sort of lawsuits.

Well.. only time will tell, but that doesn't sound like it would hold up in court. But I'm definitely not a lawyer or financial advisor.

A G4 Mini?? Yikes. All the Intel minis are all the same (slight processor difference, same chipset.)

I have one of these as well, and it's dog slow. Compared to my Core 2 Duo machines, it's feels practically unusable! Firefox 3 takes about 25 seconds to launch on it, compared to about 4 seconds on my new systems.

Yeah, that's the funny thing was that Apple was bragging that these computers were "2-3x faster" compared to the P4 3.2 Northwoods/prescotts of the same era. I'm surprised there wasn't a class action lawsuit as my overclocked (1.42--->1.67, with a 7200rpm 100gb drive) G4 Mini is much slower running mac os than one of my hackintoshes with a 2.8ghz prescott.

Apple released a statement right after Jobs did backing up Steve.

Yep, but I ain't paying full price for a mid-2007 tech mac mini. I will just build a mini clone with an aopen or shuttle case or something instead.

I would guess that at least some of the items on your list will be announced in 4-8 weeks.

Except that they already publicly announced that Jobs missed the show because of health issues.

mine started life as a 1.5 CS but was a 2.1 CD by the time i got it.

Now it's a 2.33 C2D.

If you find the right deals, you can piece together a sweet mini.

I've been meaning to upgrade mine but the cost of the 2.33 is a lot for such a small gain:(
I tell myself that I guess that if I were to add the 2.33 and to the e-sata mod I'd be more content. Then I remember the integrated video chipset Model No. and I try to put it all out of my mind:(

This actually makes a lot of sense. I bet they have a team of people that tracks trends such as loyalty, new product excitement, relations to Steve Jobs, and so on, despite what they say otherwise. So much of their company is based on hype - the fun keynote speeches, the exciting new products, the secrecy about new releases. So much of this keynote was just "yawn"...a 17" update (shocker!) with better battery life (but you can't take out the battery!), DRM-free iTunes (some already was DRM, or you could always go to Amazon MP3), iLife/iWork 09 updates (another shocker!), with web-based editing (MobileMe foreshadowing? obviously).

Based on your theory, this makes complete sense...introduce the new guy without setting a trend that whenever he appears, new and magical and wonderful things will follow. Let Jobs make a few more exciting annoucements to help him fade from the limelight.

Or maybe they just didn't care and they wanted to announce all of these expected updates at their own leisure, rather than jump through hoops for a show they aren't going to be a part of anymore.

I caught a price fluke almost a year ago and got a 2.33 C2D for ~$330. Worth it.

Yea.. way more than I would pay to upgrade a mini.. that's for sure. I draw the line when it costs more than half of what it costs for a new machine. Usually at that point.. I just buy a new machine. Of course, right now you don't have the option to buy a new machine.. but I really feel like it's coming. Too much new information surrounds it for it not to be coming very soon.

$330 for a 2.33 Ghz chip is too expensive?? $500 is a pretty common street price for this chip TODAY and I bought it a year ago.

No, it wasn't cheap, but I'm not comfortable with my main machine being a hackintosh which would have been the only real alternative to upgrading my mini (not going back to PC, can't justify 2k on a Mac Pro or even 1500 on a MBP).

Especially since, like I said earlier in this thread, I didn't anticipate (then) and don't (now) a Mini refresh.

Apple would counter by saying that OSX of the time was optimized for PowerPC and these tweaks made it run faster than it would in intel competition. Probably a small shred of truth in that statement, but comeon.

This year's Macworld was horrible. I've been trying to switch my primary computer to Mac since i bought my PowerBook G4 4.5 years ago, but apple has yet to release an intel product that fits my needs. (mid range tower PLEEASE) I was planning on settling this year for an imac, or possibly ponying up for a mac pro if the updates produced a sweet machine, but sadly i got..... nothing. Looks like more waiting for updates...

If you're waiting on updates from Apple, you might be waiting for a while. They have a great habit of trickling out releases so there isn't as good a "striking point" as there are with other vendors.

Yeah before I finally caved in and started reading insanelymac and Kaido's excellent guides here, I spent quite a bit of money on my 2nd mac mini. I bought a core solo used mini for $400 on the 'bay. Bought a used C2D 2.0, modded a Sata cable extension and then attached a 500gb 3.5" WD with an external power adapter. That finally made the mini a decent machine. Sad to say but my first hackintosh slays my mini for half the price lol.

Apple really needs to release a new mini please!

Just a question, and you may be too young/not in to the mac scene long enough to remember, but try and tell me when the last time Apple released a 'mid-range tower' and then tell me why, oh why, do people keep holding their breath for it?

Screw "to be or not to be," that is the question.

It doesn't fit with Steve Jobs' world view to produce a consumer-upgradable tower (Mac pro isn't really geared towards consumer market.)

(I mean consumer vs business)

And what, praytell, is Steve Jobs' worldview?

I am not disagreeing, but marking down all of Apple's flaws (and some of their qualities) under the heading of "Steve Jobs wants it this way" sort of feels like a cop-out.

He is just one guy. He shapes the company, but he doesn't control everything.

It makes me wonder what their numbers are telling them. If a 12" was profitable, they probably would have already released a more portable MBP like the old Powerbook. BUT, we all know that a Mac Pro Lite tower would be profitable, and yet they won't release one. They have odd reasons for doing things. I really hate their 99% rule: give the customers almost everything they want, but hold one or two things back so they hate us, haha. Release an awesome 13" with real graphics, but drop Firewire. Release a 15" for professionals, but no matte option. Release a 17" with a matte option, but no removable battery. Bleh. This is why I have a Hackintosh :p

Maybe it's that everybody is rich!

The point is, the last time Apple release a tower that you could consider 'mid-range' was the $1500 PowerMac G4 in 2003, the last of the G4 PM's and I don't think the price will put it on people's 'mainstream' list.

Listen, a mid-range upgradeable tower just isn't happening. Deal with it and move on, but please stop claiming it to be your 'roadblock to owning a mac.'

Ahhh yes the G4 tower, but you beat me to that option. Honestly, I am old enough to remember, and would be perfectly happy with a G4 Cube style box. Too bad you are right, I'll probably never see the day when apple releases my perfect machine :(
