Let's talk about what DIDN'T happen at Macworld

-No iPhone updates (32gb?)
-No iPhone Nano
-No Mac Mini update (goo!)
-No Quad-Core iMacs
-No Core i7-Xeon Mac Pros
-No Snow Leopard
-No Turtlenecks
-No Home Server

I am glad we have DRM-free iTunes, a 17" unibody, and new iLife & iWork updates, but I feel like they missed a lot of things that most consumers (well, nerds anyway) would care about. I'm particularly disappointed by the lack of a new Mac Mini

The Phone, Home Server, and Core i7 stuff was all silly to expect in the first place. However I can't fathom why they didn't announce hardware refreshes for the bulk of the desktop line. The iMac and the Mini both are overdue for updates, and they're obviously going to get the C2D + 9400M treatment at some point.

I have a good conspiracy theory that explains the missing items.

Apple decided to delay everything about a month because Steve is actually much sicker than anyone is letting on. Apple knew if anything really big happened at the expo, it would fuel more speculation that Steve missed it because of serious health issues, otherwise, we would have done the show. By intentionally making the show as boring as it was, it reinforces that it wasn't that important so Steve just didn't feel the need to do the show while he recovers from his "hormone imbalance."

I would guess that at least some of the items on your list will be announced in 4-8 weeks.

^^^ While the above post would seem intriguing if true, I think the lack of macworld is the fact that apple is done with macworld. It is why they are pulling out, any big product announcements will come in the form of how apple plans to release them without macworld.

None the less I am EXTREMELY disappointed at how truly bad this macworld was.

What's killing me, is I've been teetering on picking up a 3.06/24"/8800GS iMac for a few months. I kept telling myself, wait until MacWorld. Then I caught wind of the Mac Mini refresh, which would've been ideal -- especially with an nVidia refresh. So here I am, back where I started. Ugh, I hate being here. Funny thing is, not like it's the first time -- or the last. Ah well.

I felt my stomach wrench when the last keynote topic came up, and it wasn't the Mac Mini..

This actually makes a lot of sense. I bet they have a team of people that tracks trends such as loyalty, new product excitement, relations to Steve Jobs, and so on, despite what they say otherwise. So much of their company is based on hype - the fun keynote speeches, the exciting new products, the secrecy about new releases. So much of this keynote was just "yawn"...a 17" update (shocker!) with better battery life (but you can't take out the battery!), DRM-free iTunes (some already was DRM, or you could always go to Amazon MP3), iLife/iWork 09 updates (another shocker!), with web-based editing (MobileMe foreshadowing? obviously).

Based on your theory, this makes complete sense...introduce the new guy without setting a trend that whenever he appears, new and magical and wonderful things will follow. Let Jobs make a few more exciting annoucements to help him fade from the limelight.

I just wanted something G200 based in a Mac so that I can use something faster than an 8800GTX in a Hackintosh.

They haven't ever seemed to care about the Mini, originally it was there to absorb excess notebook parts from the previous gen, now they don't even bother with that.

Oh well, mine might well be the fastest mini ever (only a slight exaggeration since I put a 2.33 C2D in it).

Is it just me or is this the first Macworld that doesn't introduce something "innovative". Innovation is what apple is known for and they released nothing that we didn't know.

I guess the only innovation they made was the ridiculous battery in the 17 in MBP.

My only issue with this is that I thought that as long as Apple stays silent they aren't really held responsible from their shareholders.. however, now that Steve has released this letter.. and if it comes out that he has something worse and the stocks plummet. Their company is on the line. I don't believe Apple would be that stupid. I believe that Steve is sick, they decided to do some interim releases to tide people over.. and they'll be back with a bang next month, or March.

Nice mod! Well, Apple did say they'll be focusing on notebooks a whole lot more now. It's all about laptops + iPhone now.

Well, Snow Leopard is coming up and has some huge innovations (namely Grand Central and OpenCL), so that will be pretty big. Other than a Home Server, I don't really see what else they would come up with - they have a pretty good product range already!

I have one of these as well, and it's dog slow. Compared to my Core 2 Duo machines, it's feels practically unusable! Firefox 3 takes about 25 seconds to launch on it, compared to about 4 seconds on my new systems.
