Let's talk about door dampers

Which ones have you used, what is your experience with them, and which ones do you recommend?

Looking at these kwik fix ones. They seem nice. It's a bit spendy if you don't buy a bunch. But at $3 per door, that seems pretty affordable.

How do you dampen drawers? I'm assuming you might use the same thing? I don't know.

Really?

conventional dampers have been out of style for almost a decade. the latest and greatest are cross-linked fluid inerters with frequency-selective damping and simultaneous roll and jounce control. expect to pay $200-400 million per year for the whole thing.

How about just using the old sticky backed felt tabs, which keep the door from slamming into its frame, the felt just softens the blow.

My favorite ones for drawers are from Blum, they're typically called "soft-close hinges":

The Blumotion series from Blum is really nice:

It basically has a little braking mechanism that kicks in when you shut the drawer. Depending on the manufacturer, you can get them in all different flavors - spring-fingers for cabinets, sliding rails, arm system for doors, whatever you want. Typically there are cheapies and then there's the good stuff, which of course costs a bit more but usually lasts longer. As with anything else, read the reviews to see what people are saying. I think even IKEA has their own line out now - saw some on their floor demos last time I was there.

If you're renting the best ones are the ones you don't buy.

Why are you paying money to improve a cheap rented apartment?

I've been living here for almost a year and a half without ever really investing in this place. Looking back on it, that seems dumb, but I understand my past logic. (Similar to yours) So what if I pay a few extra dollars to have some nice things? Maybe I will get some of that money back. Who knows. Either way, I'm going to be here for over 2 more years. I figure I may as well try to have a nice place. I can sell most of my shit later. I can even take those dampers out later and take them to my new place. 😛

Yeah, I'm sure your landlord is going to be happy with you leaving screw holes in all of his cabinet doors. Being a poor college student, you should act like one.

He was fine with me doing a lot of things to the apartment (Some of which I haven't done). He knows that I'm smart. :awe: He liked the light that I installed today too. 😉

Lets talk about Nazi's and the atrocities they have committed instead.

Congrats! Your suicide by mod attempt has been successful.

Which ones are best for each situation and where do I get them?

You need to be more specific than that.
You can get a hinge that softcloses, or you can get a damper.
There are pneumatic and hydraulic.
I would recommend pneumatic, as hydraulic ones can go bad and start leaking oil eventually.

With drawer slides, there are so many softclose options.
Are you looking for undermount or sidemount slides?
