Sure, you can only use 3 knives, but there are tools for every job. Why don't you just use a machete for everything? Oh, that's right, because it is stupid.
good knives are expensive... I'd usually recommend getting 2-3 good knives that you can use you 99% of normal tasks, and then buying others as-needed only.

if each socket was $150+, you probably wouldn't suggest someone run out to Home Depot for a 10-piece ratchet set when 2 would do the trick.

Lately I've been lazy & have just been using my 10" Chef's knife for virtually everything. Wish I had a better one, but this one is pretty awesome for forty bucks:
