Want to know what the slowest machine you have running WIN2k is... cause I have an AMD K6-2/350MHz with about 96MB RAM and I'd like to know if WIN2k can run on that. WIN98 ain't doing it for my bro anymore...

Minimum reqs for WIN2k say at least 128MB RAM, but screw that... think it'll still be useable ? If I load something like Photoshop, will that run at a crawl on top of the demanding OS layer ?

I would think it is usable. I installed win NT 4.0 on a 300 celeron with 32mb of ram, and it was super fast:confused:

PII 300 192MB PC-66 was fine.

Edit: 192MB was after upgrade. It ran fine with 64MB.

I've got it running on a K6- @ 400MHz without a problem; that system has 128MB RAM. 96 shouldn't be too much of a problem I wouldn't think.

We've got some old Compaq PCs w/P2 266MHz processors, 64MB RAM, and a 2GB hard drive running win2k at work. It works and does everything it needs to... but damn I can't stand those slow POS PC's. Takes 45 minutes just to install a service pack. :disgust:

I think it'd be usable with that, more RAM will help a lot though. I had a friend who tried installing Win2K on a Celeron 266 (the old ones without any L2 cache) with 64MB RAM, and it wasn't too pleasant. That thing would hit the swap file all day long. It was still 'usable' I suppose, but definitely not something I'd want to be using on a daily basis.

Anyone know what TYAN mobos used for RAM back in the AMD K6-2 days ? Were they PC66 SIMMS or were they PC100 dimms? I think all slots are full right now, so it'd be replacing 1 or 2 sticks... maybe that's an option...

FWIW- I'm running XP Pro on a PII- 266 at home with 256megs of RAM. It's not a speed demon, but hasn't locked up yet for stuff like word processing and non-gaming stuff. I bet Photoshop (particularly with the amount of RAM I have) would nuke it tho.

He's a Photoshop / Dreamweaver / SoundForge / GoLive type of user... so I'm thinking this is a terrible idea.

I had Win2k running on my older P-166Mhz with 64mb ram. Before that I had NT4 Server on a laptop with P-90 and 16MB RAM and a 800MB hdd. Now that was slow!

Unless he installs a gig of RAM....you're probably right. It takes my dinosaur machine almost three minutes to sort out my playlist (approx 5500 songs) when I open WMP to use it as a jukebox. I have to boot it up, open WMP and go do something else for a few minutes.

**UPDATE** - Woohooo... my fiance is giving him her WIN2k AMD K6-450MHz with 256MB PC100 to use... since it's just sitting in the attic doing nothing.

Well at least this has been a learning experience... you people are insane. ;)

GOnna bring home his 350MHz and attempt it anyway. MUhahahaha.

I ran it on a k6-2 300 with 128 megs of ram, and it was just fine. Go for it.

Pentium 233MMX - 64MB of SIMMS here too. It wasn't blistering fast or anything, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.
