The US is regarded as having the best higher educational institutions.

And...despite what people here and in Japan think, US made vehicles are still considered high quality in most parts of the world.

People don't think, they compare and buy and the proof is in the numbers.
And as it comes to US cars sold abroad. I have driven them, and they aren't the same cars sold here for the most parts.
US companies have a much more fierce completion to deal with in places where true cars are made, so they up their quality and sell / design some decent stuff over in places where there are high standards for cars like Europe and the Middle East then they go ahead and sell you the crap over here. Just go to Europe or the Middle East and you'll see that the crap sold here has no chance of making it over there, except for a select few cars (Cadillac & GMC mainly)

There is still a lot of racial problems in this country, but this is the only country I know of where people from all over the world get along relatively well. My cousins think this is the greatest country on Earth and the most generous. When they came to this country in 2001, they didn't have more than a couple of hundreds dollar, speak no English (One of their older brother sponsored them). Now they have their own business, and doing well. A couple of weeks ago, they let me know that they all had passed the citizenship test, and they are very proud and very happy.

The notion that people would like to feel good about something gives you *shudders*?

Let me get this right, when seeing someone feeling good about themselves you feel compelled to point out their deficiencies? And, you do this, why? To make them a better person by making sure they are mired in the deepest of depressions and despair?

Do you really think that any one of the posters in this thread are not aware of the shortcomings of this country?

Why would you do this? What makes you want to make sure that everyone is miserable?

*confused*

1. Manhattan Project was formed to compete with Nazi scientists, not the USSR
2. Rest of the Allies didn't trust the USSR with anything, therefore, the TOP SECRET Manhattan Project was closed to Soviet scientists. American/British/Canadian scientists independently designed a working atomic bomb
3. Those that did cooperate with Soviet scientists or who were discovered were executed.
4. The Soviets did complete their respective atomic and nuclear bomb programs with blazing speed because of spy work, which is not the same as cooperation.

Bang for the buck.

You are not going to buy quality stuff any cheaper elsewhere. Sure you can buy better quality stuff elsewhere but for 8x as much, or craps that are cheaper elsewhere but 1/4 as good.

Cars are cheap for the price
Electronics are cheap for the price
You get to return what you buy if you change your mind
Cheap fuel (relatively speaking)
Affordable housing (relatively speaking, compare to the rest of the world)
Affordable education (not free but still affordable)

Just don't waste your $ too fast and you can actually save quite a bit, the problem we have however is we waste our $ too fast.

The United States is not weak in any area, and excells in quite a few. Among them:

1. Fairly even distribution of wealth.
2. Excellent secondary schools.
3. Decent to excellent infrastructure.
4. Good R&D in all scientific/engineering fields.
5. Best Entertainment industry.
6. Free flowing, self-sustaining economy that is relatively stable.

The other flip side is that you have no privacy in your own country. Mafia bosses and so on do have ways to hide their money either it's money laundering or Zurich accounts. This only helps us catch the dumb ones that don't really know sht. Meanwhile the entire American public gets screwed.
Also this means that corrupt government officials have access to your bank account, that is scarier than anything.

Tasing is a big deal. Cops need to think a million times before they use their guns, however they only have to blink before tasing someone. The consequences on the victim are tragic but since he isn't dead the cops get away with it. It's inhumane as much as putting a victim in between 4 cops kicking the sht out of him is inhumane, especially when the victim isn't a physical threat.

The only way they can get better IMO is if they let the Germans do it for them. Pontiac has already let Holden of Australia which (they own) make their GTO which proved to be a huge success also the G8 is going to be one too.

Which is smart, really smart. It lessens the pollution and only those who need a bigger vehicle use a bigger vehicle. A guy driving a Ford Excursion / Ram 1500/ Ford 150 / Hummer / GMC Envoy /....etc to work / school would be labeled dumbass everywhere he goes, putting the social pressure on him to put away his stupid toy and get a real transportation means.Pluspublic transportation is a joke in the states (overall)!

The beef is that it's a company that produces inferior products to their competitors and mainly remain in power through illegal, monopolistic, anti-completive means and locking people into proprietary formats and data. And have remained in power mainly due to our weak legislations on the matter!
Just look at how EU treats Microsoft every time it gets out of line and tries to push things around BAM it gets the whip and pays the price (and that applies the same way to many European companies that step out of line). Had we had legislations like the EU did when we Microsoft first started, we would have had a healthy market now where companies are creative productive and play it fair and by the books, giving consumers a say and an option.

This is an annoying thing. I'm sure this comment will piss off a lot of people outside the united states...but I think the US partially subsidizes research into drugs for the rest of the world. It shouldn't be possible to re-import a drug for less cost, but without the collective bargaining power of government healthcare people in the US get raped on the price. If our country bargained prices down to a similar level, other countries would be forced to pay more to make up for the loss of profit. There are a lot of things wrong with the pharm industry, don't get me wrong...but it seems like a lot of the pure research gets done by these for-profit giants from the US...and then the US citizens get stuck with the bill.

Meaning, let's admit our faults and fix them.

You of all people know that indebtedness, lack of savings, too much credit spending, etc. are all unhealthy practices for the average American.

All encouraged by our fine Federal Government which penalizes savings and subsidizes debt through our tax code. In spite of all that we still manage to be some of the most productive and generous people the world has ever seen.

This is true. We give breaks for going into debt, then turn around and tax people that save their money and then erode the value of what they have left with more inflation. (last part is only partially controlled by the government I'll admit, but old helicopter ben certainly isn't helping the situation) And then we have people in washington throwing up their hands going "Why don't americans save more!?"

Since I live in the US for the last 20 years and lived outside the US I can say the US is good at:

Opportunities - if you can't make it in the US, you can't make it anywhere else. If you work very hard and push yourself, you can be in middleclass/upper <not filty rich> without a doubt.

Freedom of religious - you don't have to join this church or that one or become this or that to fit in or move up financially.

Lack of corruption - US is not perfect but you don't see blatant corruption in financial/government as in other countries, especially third world.

Division by religious - we don't kill each other just because of religious differences (Iraq/Bosnia/etc)

Excellent interstate highway system - try to drive in other countries roads and you will appreciate this country more.

Elite university - other students are trying to get in our colleges for a reason (Ivy League).

Soda/Pop - Coke is the best thing. I tried to drink other countries soda and no contest.

I was about to say US currency but no long valid.

Last but not least - we have the biggest population (size). Take that Europe...LOL.

Opportunities - if you can't make it in the US, you can't make it anywhere else. If you work very hard and push yourself, you can be in middleclass/upper <not filty rich> without a doubt.

Freedom of religious - you don't have to join this church or that one or become this or that to fit in or move up financially.

I will have to disagree with that, you are free to believe whatever, however what you choose to believe will affect you down the road, I have experienced a lot of hate for the time I have been here for my religious beliefs (and I have never even talked about religion in the workplace, people just know it) and I had to switch jobs a couple of times so far just because of the fscking bastards who won't let me work in peace. That alone cut down my promotion chances, when you have fscktards scheming against you in the workplace just because of who you are, it becomes a rough environment.

Lack of corruption - US is not perfect but you don't see blatant corruption in financial/government as in other countries, especially third world.

Well, I don't know what you can call the current administration, if it's not blatant corruption then I have no fscking clue what is.

Division by religious - we don't kill each other just because of religious differences (Iraq/Bosnia/etc)

We do it, but it's not advertised as being so and it's not in here.

Excellent interstate highway system - try to drive in other countries roads and you will appreciate this country more.

This one I have to agree on, I LOVE driving on the highway system here in the states, so organized and so efficient that it was one of the main things that stunned me when I first came here.

Elite university - other students are trying to get in our colleges for a reason (Ivy League).
Agreed

Soda/Pop - Coke is the best thing. I tried to drink other countries soda and no contest.

I don't think so, I have tried Coke in Europe and the Middle East, tastes just fine if not better in some places.

I was about to say US currency but no long valid.

Last but not least - we have the biggest population (size). Take that Europe...LOL.

By my last count Europe had 710 million and we had 310 million but close enough...
Well that is unless what you meant by population size is the number of obese people, then we surely win!
