The draft (and the state) are worse than chattel slavery. At least slaves weren't in danger and had good living conditions.

If chattel slavery is inhumane, then how is deadly slavery humane?

It would depend on the situation. If the draft is necessary to prevent your conquest by a foreign power it is pretty easy to justify.

But in the history of the United States for most wars if not all wars you cannot make that case.

I am 100% against the draft, as a career military man I do not want to deal with new troopers who are forced to serve. This plan is a bit different and I can see where he is coming from because if you basically gut the entire military support system with cheap american conscripts it would save a hell of a lot of money.

When I was a Fort Lewis the people who did the jobs this program would do made a killing considering the work they did.

The only part that interested me was his comments on libertarians. If the US Government said that if anyone can opt of of ALL federal taxes in exchange for zero federal benefits with SS returned I would would take that option in a heartbeat. That should not be strictly for libertarians because all of a sudden we are going to be the next Tea Party with people joining for all the wrong reasons.

That's an utterly ridiculous idea. As part of living in society with a government, taxes are a necessity. They don't just fund those social welfare programs, but also all sorts of other, tangible benefits that you may or may not realize. The military can protect some of our interests throughout the globe, taxes pay for roads, customs enforcement, etc...

Well that is indeed the difference between libertarians and basically everyone else. ;)

Most people just want what others have. The current system gives that and most Americans are happy with it.
