UBID used to rock. I picked up and entire entertainment center for my house when I bought it new early 2k for less that 250. :) The only thing missing was the remote which I got a cool one that Best Buy sold for 120 for 20 shipped from Ubid. :D Then they started charging 50 bux to send a piece of paper haven't been back since.

Value America just kept sending me free money and the wife kept saying you don't need any more stuff.

I bought a Sony notebook from them a few years ago... and then they never sent it.

...then the $50 gift certificates they issued did not work...

... and when I finally talked to an operator and got that fixed it took them 2 months after the release date to get me my Resident Evil (gamecube) disc...

never again will I deal with them!

I got here a little later than some, but I do remember many of the deals mentioned.
Funny thing about Accompany/MobShop, they were a client of the company I was working for at the time. Man, did they flame out fast... unsurprisingly, they ran out of cash and couldn't pay their bills. :p

Heck, I think two of the better deals I've gotten have been just this year. The no-strings-attached FREE Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse plus the ~$200 Dell 8250 (despite the rebate nightmares). I've gotten tons of clearance deals from Target and other B&M stores as well.

Any time I need to spend money on anything, I know where to look first. :D This forum has been very helpful to me and I've tried to contribute what I can. Big thanks to everyone here who helps out with deals and info.

This whole thread makes me wish I had found this forum back then, I would have LOVEd all these deals... I just have to hope there's something good I get in on now-a-days.

I barely missed out on the 1,000 Ama*on board games for the price of one with the stackable 2 for 1 coupons... Damn!

Wow, many, many old timers in here.

I shied away from the WMC deal, but Mercata and Value America kept me happy :)

Thanks for the "carolyn" post. She was probably the most active WMC and received her NDA after a bit. Also - the ping pong table was delivered Freight (I think it was Roadway - shipping was "free") :)

Who was here at AnandTech when....................................................................

Still hold on to the copy of the check buy.com gave me.

hom·age ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hmj, m-)

Ceremonial acknowledgment by a vassal of allegiance to his lord under feudal law.
Special honor or respect shown or expressed publicly.

Awe sweet memories!

During these days a Canopus Spectra 2500 would get you far and the Abit BH6 with a stick of 64 mb Mushkin PC100 and a Celeron 300a would get you further.

Thanks Russ! (compucheap.com)

I was actually a member in 1998 under a webtv account (jhouston@webtv.net)
I remember because I bought and sold Gold Zelda games on Ebay and the Hot Deals was not around then.

I forgot I had this account. Apparently the email tied to it is no longer valid.

RIP Buy.om

Does Rakuza.com, I mean, Rakuten.com still steal your CC# and force users to give them CC#s instead of PayPal to get specials?

At one point, they even got Visa to give them customer's CC#s when the customers used virtual credit card numbers (apparently big vendors can do this) and then sold the CC#s off. Nobody seemed to want to peg them as the culprit, except for all the victims.

Man, this thread is a trip. I still have my Palm III I got for zero dollars with Value America's $100 off of $100 coupon. Still waiting for my 19" Hitachi. Any day now.

Obviously this forum is no where as busy as it was 15 years ago. What is the best place to find hot deals these days? I always check hot deal forums but they have all fallen by the way side.

I have better luck finding hot deals just checking newegg everyday for their shell shockers.

I usually check Slickdeals. Although not totally centered around electronics and computer parts they do have a fairly decent sort and filter option.

Ditto for slick deals. buildapcsales on reddit is good too. Techbargains dot com is still around it seems. For video games, isthereanydeal dot com is great.
