Screw the NSX. It's too overpriced.

Honda needs a $30,000 - $40,000 sports car in the same ilk as the RX7/350Z/Supra

They do -- Honda S2000

Grr, I love the Honda's 🙂

The IS300 has the same engine as the late *non-turbo* Supra.

Just like the Infinity J30 had the same engine as the non-turbo 300ZX.

There are big-HP IS300's out there, but they use TT Supra engines. Why re-invent the wheel when Toyota already produced the engine you're trying to make?

Considering that the new 350Z is less powerful than the previous TTZ, I don't think Toyota needs to make a car to have a "Z killer". Their MkIV Supra is a 350Z killer, and my 91TTZ is a 350Z killer.

It's a sad thing... times have changed and currently the market will no longer bear a high end sports car from these companies. What they can do is make an affordable car like the 350Z, and make it as fast as possible. The TTZ and the Supra were over $40k when they were out. You can get a brand new 350Z for $27k. You get a lot for your money, but you don't get a TTZ or Supra killer.

If I'm not mistaken, the 350Z is just as fast as the old 300ZX TT and weighs a few hundred pounds less.

The engine in stock tuning was very good, but it's ability to be modified is what really solidified it as what it is now. Yeah, there are alot of guys around that brag that their car is fast because they have a Supra and it's only a naturally aspirated one, but the modified turbo charged ones are down right awe inspiring.

It's not just as fast. It's slightly slower, and has a slower trap speed.

To about 60 mph it's just about as fast, but after that point it starts to fall back. By the end of the quarter mile it's about 2 or 3 tenths of a second behind and about 3 mph slower.

I have an article showing the Z to do 13.7 in the quarter, at about 104 mph. Personally, I only ran a 13.8 in mine while stock. But that's still better than what the 350Z has done.

What's the difference between the engines? Isn't it the same I6, with the only difference being turbos?

I wouldn't mind if Nissan came out with a turbo or TT 350Z, but I doubt they'll go down the same road that led to the previous generation's demise. A turbo Z will probably only be achieved in the aftermarket.

We'll see what happens if Mazda releases a new RX7 or if Toyota releases a new Supra. If they're faster than the Z, maybe they will consider a turbo version just for bragging rights

You are aware that there is a supercharger available for the Z now. adds about 80hp. so a turbo'd supra would run about even with a supercharged Z.

edit, my bad, the HP rating has changed on it.

here's some infostillen loving

Yeah, but it's not from Nissan AFAIK. It's probably Stillen or some other company.

If the new Supra were going to still have the I-6, it would have to be turbo'd from the factory.

The engine takes an incredibly amount of abuse. That is why people would like to see it

Ya it wasn't too bad. If you want an example of a bad engine you'll look at the Twin Turbo RX-7s of the early 90s... I was looking on Ebay and 1/2 of them had rebulilt motors around 50k miles.

You do know that most turbo setups and supercharger setups "from factory" aren't designed in house.
and with the way laws are now, i can add a super charger or turbo and it won't void my engine warranty.
Only way to void engine warranties now is by changing cams, or internal components.

No, it's much more involved than that. You can't just slap a turbo on a non-turbo engine and expect it to work right. There are many, many little things that most people wouldn't realize are different.

For instance, on my Z, there's the following differences- The compression ratio is lower on the TT engine due to different pistons, the oil squirters are different to aim for a different section of the pistons, the oil pump is different (higher capacity), the valves are different (TT has inconel valves, NA has stainless steel), the fuel pump is different, the ECU is different, the exhaust manifolds are different, the fuel injectors are different (higher capacity on TT), and many other smaller parts.

You still don't walk in to a Nissan dealership and pick up a Supercharged 350Z with a full Nissan warranty. That's my point.

RX8 😀
Mazda has stated that the RX8 is not a replacement for the RX7. IIRC, they also said they may re-release the RX7.

On the MKIII Supra there were also a bunch of small differences between the 7MGE and the 7MGTE. Compression ratio was lower, different transmission, options for LSD and TEMS, exhuast was different, and a lot of the stuff in the front was different to make room for the intercooler, and obviously the differences in the intake manifold, throttle body, exhaust manifold, and piping to compensate the turbocharger.

Well you got to realize, that even when the supra comes back, it prob won't be turbo'd. Not all supras were turbo'd.

I definitely agree that Toyota needs to bring back the Supra, though I would hope that they manage to style it better than the current crop of Toyotas.

Maybe as stock, yes... but tell me running 9's on stock internals isn't impressive. I'll look for the link to back that up, but I know I've seen it more than once.

The most profitable ones were. Look at the resale figures on the Turbo or TT vs the NA. Speaks for itself.

If it comes back in "full battle armor" w/o turbos, then it won't be using the current 3.0 b/c in stock trim it doesn't have enough juice.

And YES, I know that not all Supra were turbo'd.

One fact that most people are leaving out is that the Mk IV Supra and TTZ were made to be modded, while many of the cheaper naturally aspirated cars are not. They knew they were going to be enthusiast cars. The fuel injectors that were included on the car and the strength of the engine internals from the factory were far beyond the standard "safety margin" that engineers design into things.

Most cars have parts that are designed to perform the function that the car was intended to have from the factory. You buy a Civic, and the fuel pump will only flow a little more than is required to produce the HP the car puts out stock. How come on the TTZ they included a fuel pump that can flow for over 650 hp when the engine only put out 300? How come the Supra has forged internals than can take 800 hp when its engine only put out 320 stock? I'll tell you why- the cars were both meant to be modded. The engineers knew this and designed accordingly.
