Not quite. In this case, this person was flat out offloading responsibility on the fact that "God told them to do it"

Take religion out of the equation and the responsibility falls on the driver's shoulders. What else are they going to say, "The bird flying by told me to do it, so I did"? Yeah, it's every bit as nutty as saying God told them to do it, but that's not socially acceptable and they'd be properly labeled as the nutjob they are.

Nope, the driver could have used anything else. Bottom line is there is nothing that can stop people from blaming something/someone else for their own actions. Religion is just convenient for some.
