Let 16-year-olds visit sex shops and see explicit porn, say Lib Dems (in England)

nopes, just pointing out that the change would have minimal effect on the society, kids are at that weird age and they will probably use the internet before they will even consider going to sex shops

Sounds like their Politics have allowed them to the bottom of the Cesspool as well in deperation to get every vote they feel could be humanly possible. I don't know what their Voting age is but it is obvious they are pandering to the younger folks in expectation that they will reward them with votes.

Sounds exactly like the same situation here with the Hispanic (specifically Mexicans) population as the Bush Administration has "UnOfficially" made Mexico the most southern State.

I think if all the christian conservatives put as much energy in to convincing 13 year olds not to smoke as they do to saving them from the horrors of porn, we'd be a much better society.

Actually most 16 year olds don't know much of anything about anything.
Ever try to talk to one of these kids about anything? I thought I knew alot at 16. I found out later that almost everything I was taught in school was watered down bullshit, lies and propaganda.
Also I noticed in that article that they are wanting 16 year olds to be able to appear in explicit pornography as well. That is already legal in at least one US state and that is New Hampshire. One could make and sell Pornography of 16 year olds in New Hampshire legally. It is not done to my knowledge however. Having freedoms doesn't necesarily mean people will abuse it although in alot of cases it does mean just that. Id rather err on the side of more freedom over less.

Shouldn't be driving either. They give the keys to 15 year olds here that then go out and stuff the car full of their friends and drive over 100 miles an hour and crash into trees and buildings and wonder why their kids are dead.

It could be worse . . . just think how clueless you would be if educational/sex ed policy was really coming from the Bush administration?!

Now a message from the DHHS via the CDC . . .
Announcer: All condoms in America will be labeled with precautions noting they do not protect from all diseases that might be transmitted if you had a reason to use a condom . . .

Now back to previous programming . . . in today's episode of The Real World . . . Payton is worried that one of the three girls he slept with last month might have given him gonorrhea while Peyton is worried that one of the three guys she slept with last month might have gotten her pregnant while Peyote and Pierre debate the risks of barebacking.

Yo tool . . . learn how to use the quote function.

As someone who's wholeheartedly in favor of labeling condoms (in fact they do not protect against HPV) I still believe the labeling should be accurate and it should be part of a holistic program to reduce STDs . . . including abstinence ed, safer sex ed, and general health education. Instead the proposed label implies condoms don't work . . . which is like implying that ABS, air bags, front crumple zones, and reinforced doors don't work b/c sometimes people still die in car accidents.

It's also akin to something Bugs was almost right about . . . much of American ed is simplified to the point it is inaccurate and occasionally downright false. Unfortunately, we compound that ignorance with a society that spends an order of magnitude more time and money on entertaining our children (and ourselves) instead of educating our children (and ourselves).

Bush's poo rises to the top of this bowl b/c it's his BS that just won't flush. Bushies raise hell about JJ's floppy booby while their primary media cheerleader (FOX/Murdoch) has been the smut central of broadcast airwaves for well over a decade.

Hell no they shouldn't be allowed to do that.

In fact, I feel so strongly about it, I promise that if I'm ever elected president, I'll support an amendment to our constitution to bar kids from sex shops.

This is getting ridiculous. We have this sexshop stuff and than the Liberals handing out sex stuff and saying, go out and have sex, go be like Britney spears. The parental thing to do it tell kids not to have sex. But because of this it makes me a judgmental prude.

As an older guy I am hearing stories about kids doing things (like 13 year old boys actually raping women) that I wonder if this is the result of early exposure to hard core porn that kids my age didn't really have easy access to.

I feel the same way. I'm glad I don't have kids because I think today's peer pressure and society would make it really hard for me to raise them in a way I would want them to be.

Me: I don't think 13 year old should be having sex.
Daughter: Dad, you are such a prude! A bj is not sex! All the girls are doing it. I'll still be a virgin! And I see it done in porn all the time. What's the big deal?

If you want to fix America take back the national airwaves form corporations and have your tax dollars put on programming produced at the nations universities on health, science, and the arts. Get advertising via sex as a way to sell garbage 24 hours a day 365 days a year out of the faces of children from the moment they are born. You dream of getting rich instead of having your wife raped by a lunatic thirteen year old who has had some girl's ass in his face since day one, and so you will do nothing real about why our society is ever increasing its load of psycho-pathological behavior. Oh, but junk and compulsive buying and debt are what makes us rich. And sex sells.

England ain't like America, they have different education system and different culture, at least in the past I believe 16 was considered coming of age for many things. It used to be more so here in USA too, however for some reason, parental desire to possess their children longer has become more powerful. It's an interesting issue that I don't understand why it's happened. Maybe the perceived more dangerous world out there makes parents more afraid for their kids, but this fear doesn't mean that kids develop more slowly than they used to, in fact some evidence points the other way. But then there is the increased life expectancy so it would be nice if kids would go along with their parents ideas and stay kids longer, since they'll have plenty of time to be grownups, but the process of becoming an adult isn't governed by a parent's wishes, it happens when it happens, and some of the repression of self that can take place maybe isn't so good for a person.

And it is here too, but in a different way. On the one hand we have over-protective parents who try to keep kids in a cocoon, and we have crazy culture that promotes drugs, alcohol, cigs, rape, murder, etc.

Maybe it is better to have healthy attitude about sex; then subversive nature of sex in our present culture, which helps create demand for porn in the first place, wouldn't be an issue.

UK: sex legal at 16
Alcohol: 16 in a pub with a meal (IIRC) 18 to buy your own.
Driving: 17
Voting: 18
End of compulsory education: 16
Min wage: 18+
(just for comparisons)

He described 16- and 17-year-olds as "living in a twilight zone between childhood and adulthood", gaining different rights at different ages.
Very true, it's a mess. But porn isn't a major issue anyway, no one would care too much, and would it result in re-classification of films?

Do you have a link to these "Liberals" saying "go out and have sex"? Just wondering, because I think you're talking out of your rectum.

As far as I can tell, the real issue has always been the religious right's misguided insistence we preach nothing but abstinence in our schools, denying kids an opportunity to learn information they will badly need, sooner or later. When we fail to provide good information, they fill the vacuum with nonsense and old wives tails they learn from their friends, from advertising, from television, you name it. As much as the prudes pretend otherwise, sex is one of the most powerful driving forces in life.

Universal abstinence is a pipe dream for young adults. Preaching only abstinence leads them to make ignorant, often tragic decisions about love and sex. Let parents handle preaching; let schools provide vital information about one of the most important aspects of human existence.

LOL, when I was a teenager one of my main goals in life was to get some nooky from a babe. No amount of teaching about abstinence would have made a bit of difference. I seriously doubt that it would today either with teenagers. In fact I'd think that they'd make sex seem like the "Forbidden Fruit" only enticing the kids to get a taste of it!
