I wouldn't let the 30 days slip by without some testing. Toss a couple of random drives in it JBOD and in just a few minutes you can have it updated and running. I hooked up my new IX2 2TB, did a SLOW copy of my old IX2 files, let a run a few days, then powered it down and put it away.

For $25 I may pick up one of the 1TB media servers, essentially looks like a one drive NAS. https://www.parallelminer.com/produ...ter-1tb-2tb-3tb-network-attached-storage-nas/

Gotcha. Yeah, I want to get it up and running with the single 8tb and see how well the rsync works. I'm sure the underlying file systems is just like the intel ss4200-e where it's just using mdadm for the raid so a hardware failure in the unit shouldn't kill the data if it can be easily moved to a linux system.

For just a little over $20 more, you can get the 3TB version for $48. Actually, that's a cheap price for just a 3TB drive as you can't buy them that cheap used moreless open box new.

So I forgot to update with my experience. This was definitely a steal at $34 shipped (now is $44+ship? at parallel miner and $49 shipped at centrix).

My Seagate 8TB ST8000NM0055-1RM112, firmware SN05 worked right out of the box with no firmware update needed even though one was available. I had some trouble getting the drive to physically connect to the sata connector, but after loosening the mount in the unit a bit by unscrewing it (I saw that it was barely crooked), I was able to get the drive to install.

This is a pretty feature rich nas. Not as feature rich as my Synology, but more than my Intel ss4200-e, Netgear Readynas Ultra on os4, or my WD Cloud EX2. An rsync job between the readynas and ix2 worked well (my main reason for getting the ix2--native rsync server), but exposed the serious drawback of this unit--the cooling.

The fan in this unit does not ramp up the way it needs to and simply lets everything cook. I actually aborted the rsync job test because I saw the temps of the Lenovo start to approach 170F and the fan didn't budge from its ~800rpms even though it is capable of running at ~2000rpms. On the other side, the netgear started to ramp up the fan to keep the components cool as the rsync was taxing both units since the drives in both were capable of saturating gigabit.

Unfortunately, this is fairly well-known issue that was never addressed in these units, and so far I haven't found a way to control the fans via ssh to make them run at 100%. It's so bad, I'm not comfortable adding a second drive in the unit until I can figure out how to cool it better. The fan speed control is via the voltage coming directly from the motherboard too, so there is no way to easily remove a pwm pin and make the fans run 100%. If anyone has an ideas on how to fix this, I'm open to suggestions. At this point, I haven't opened the unit because the little 'warranty void' sticker still acts as a deterrent even though there isn't a real warranty on it.

Aside from the cooling issues and the fact that not all the applications will work due to this being an eol product without any support, it does a decent job of just serving files, although performance is on par with my Intel ss4200-e, which is the slowest (and oldest) of my nas units. This will not saturate gigabit with a single drive, even if the drive is capable of doing so. I haven't done and don't plan on doing any raid0 tests even when I install a second drive, so someone else will have to report on that.

So, I just saw that there is a fanless, 1 drive version of this with 3TB available for $65 at centrix and $48 at parallel miner:

Considering I found out they're installing new OEM HGST midline enterprise drives in these, that's a pretty solid deal for a nas with a drive. I'm quite tempted myself since these can be remotely updated with rsync and put everywhere.

I guess that I never noticed any temp issues with mine, because:
1) I never really got into using the Rsync server.
2) I was using pair of 2TB Hitachi "CoolSpin" 5400RPM HDDs, which stayed pretty cool.

Rsync definitely hammers it--probably because it's transferring at max speed.

I haven't actually checked the drive temp, but the enterprise drive temps might have something to do with it--still, the netgear has basically the same drive (12TB) and it's 20F cooler and the fan ramps up. I actually hate these stupid ramping fan designs because of stuff like this--fans should be allowed to cool. If you can't stand the noise, move away from the unit.

The EZmedia single drives are so cheap I was tempted, but iirc after some searching on them decided to skip them.

Re the IX2, iirc there is an option in the settings to disable fan control so it defaults to full speed. Both of my IX2, new and 5 years old tend to run hot ala 140ish F in our 73F house, one of the reasons I only bought one more of them and am still looking at a PX4-400D, two years newer product and pro series instead of consumer.

If only 3TB wasn't such a lame size for future expansion, and the EZmedia the only system where they seem to be pricing the drives attractively.

My gut feeling is that they are dinking around with the pricing, mostly raising some prices in preparation for some big sale to actually move a few of the 131 for example PX4 they still have not sold. Sunday night, Monday morning is my usual check prices day, as soon or if a 4x 4TB option gets tempting I may get one more NAS

What did you find on the ez media? From what I can tell it uses the same firmware as the ix2?

Where is this fan setting? I would LOVE to do that to my unit! Thank you eternally in advance!!

They do seem to dink around with pricing. But they better as they do have quite a few of these and once we're into 2021, they're a 2yr eol product.

Price may drop more later on, but sale today so I bought one.
Lenovo EMC PX4-400D Network Storage 0TB Diskless Desktop NAS SM10G786501$109.00

Tax in Calif, but free shipping from www.parallelminer.com I didn't notice a big change in price on anything else, except I think one of the rack units diskless was also cheap.

Yup, the chart was no doubt dated even at the last update. Chart shows HUS724040ALE640 , and I am looking at some of those as well as HUS724040ALE641, the latter ending in 1 means it allows encryption, anybody think that matters? Both are 4k sector with legacy 512 emulation.

Thanks, good to know. The two drives I mention above are the same price from the same vendor, but for whatever reason the E641 with encryption has a 3 yr vs 2 yr warranty, so I was giving it the edge.

I did a little searching in my docs, found zip, so it may be located in the device setup using the web interface of the IX2. Hover the mouse over items and a pop up shows the options.

Nominally I was looking for a 1TB ext to use with my Wii, so it could have been something USB related, but it nixed the device at $25 shipped, so could have been something basic.
I checked all the options but didn't find it on mine. What version of the firmware are you running?

What do you mean? Your Wii killed it?

8TB worked fine in my ix2 straight out of the box so I don't think you'll have any issues. I actually have a 16TB I'm going to try in my ix2, the ezdrive, my old netgear readynas (it already works with a 12tb), and my synology, and a new to me qnap on the way. This should keep me good on storage for a while.

So a little bit of an update on my ezdrive. Definitely not the fastest thing--tops our around 22MB/sec, which is basically usb speeds. But for the size of an external usb drive except the convenience of a nas, it works for me. Great off-site backup device that doesn't need a computer to get to the files.

But the problem with the one I got (and perhaps with all of these) is that the drive used was the notorious ST3000DM001--the famed drive in the backblaze reports that had high failure rates:

So while the nas was working fine and passed a h2testw write test (it didn't do the verify for some reason), after copying a little over 2TB of data, the nas became terribly unresponsive and transfer rates dropped to just a few MB/s with a lot of choppiness.

Well, I emailed parallel miner and got a quick response. I mentioned that I suspect the drive has failed versus the unit so I can test the drive if that helps. They said go ahead so I disassembled the unit and tested the drive using WD's datalifeguard. The drive passed the short test, but failed a long test citing 'too many bad sectors'. So the nas unit works well with speed caveats, but the drive may fail on you. Parallel Miner is sending me a replacement unit. They even offered an upgrade to an ix2-dl unit, but since their current stock of ix2-dl's are actually regular units sans drive, you have to install the firmware on them so I passed on the deal.

Since I just recently got some 16TB Seagate Exos drives (which are running a long scan in datalifeguard), I plan on putting one of these in the ezdrive and see what happens.

If I can get the fan to run faster in the ix2 I have, I'll try 2x 16tb in it too. I have every confidence it will work in the ix2 and am quite curious about the ezdrive.

That would make my stockpile of ix2-dl units a bit more valuable, if they can actually take 2x 16TB drives. Are you going to RAID-1 (mirror) them (16TB net), or RAID-0 (stripe) them (32TB net)?

I can try it both ways as I just plan to install them and then probably use them jbod if that's possible.

But again, I've got to find a way to cool that thing before I even think about 2x drives. It's too hot for my tastes as it is right now and I can't find a way to get the fan to run 100%.
