Lego sets- Whats the point?

when I was a kid, I had a bucket of Legos.

we used our imagination to build stuff.

now you have sets like a Knight's Castle.
follow instructions to build it.

so you build it and play w/it a little while.
then what? take it apart and rebuild the same thing?

(The Death Star and Super Star Destroyer I understand.. but a generic castle?)

I used to build, play a bit, then take it all apart and throw it in a basket, then every now and then build very simple things before I got bored and stopped. I recently picked a few sets up for shits and giggles -- really bored -- and built them then put them on display -- I like this approach much better.

wow, thanks for this link; going to order one. i went to toys r us the other day and they said they dont carry classic legos anymore. just the crappy sets. my kids buy those stupid ninjago ones and the girlie ones called Friends. they never break em apart. im like dayum..boring! those lame sets cost up to $100. :\

Models in general, used to have a whole shelf of those, I used to have two armies more or less coming at each other on one long shelf long ago.

What's your point ?

It was pretty much a functional learning thing when you where young at a certain age once upon a time I guess, like learning to play chess was pre computers more or less I suppose.

Chess still is I guess, but was a developmental thing at one time, on top of it kept kids occupied, Like Lincoln logs also where.

Lego Leagues for robotics still are for starters in FIRST competitions.

The sets I guess are just for building something like models building used to be I guess.

I'm sure people use things from different sets to do other things.

You most likely had multiple themed sets and just forgot over time. It all ended up in the LEGO bucket once you were done.

My brother and I had a big plastic bin full of Legos as kids. We'd buy the sets and follow the instructions to make whatever it was, and then they'd eventually get taken apart and added to the pile of Legos where we'd then just build stuff on our own.

I remember well when I got my first few "Construction" LEGO sets. The ones with the MOTORIZED box. Whoohoo! With two of those, I could actually build a (tethered) remote-controlled vehicle. Of my own design!

Man, those things were great, back in the day.

Yeah, I probably had a bunch of kits, but screw following the instructions, just built what you like. That's how I was.

I used to make cars out of Knex. Crash the car, it would be all mangled. Rebuild the car, reinforcing what broke. Crash it again.

It was pretty beast by the end of it. IIRC I could ramp it down 2 flights of stairs into a wall. Had bumpers to absorb impacts and everything.

the themed sets, particularly the castles and city stuff, have been around since the 70s, at least

You can build anything you want. That's the whole point. And I think every set includes instructions on how to build two different things from the same parts. It's inspiration, not a mandate.
