legal polygamy, yay or nay?

I live where polygamy is a real problem, Ther biggest bunch of welfare whores in the world. Adultry is illegal in all states,as well as child molestatation, two very common practices of polygamist society. In breading engenders children born with birth defects and reatardation, an ugly (and rarely discussed) side affect of a closed community.

This isn't worth discuusion. Its a bad idea! :disgust:

It's not banned in Mass.

Who in their right mind would want more than 1 wife?

The current count is:

Missouri: First State to be Officially Anti-Gay
Louisiana: 2nd State to be Officially Anti-Gay as of 9/18/04

Massachusetts Only State Gay is not discriminated against

I really don't care about polygamy. I'm more of a live and let live kind of guy.

I suppose the issues brought up by Tripleshot would vanish if the people would not be forced into a closed society.

I have had 1 wife for 32 years, and that is enough for me thank you. I suppose you could pique my interest though if the question were about having a couple of concubines.

It is none of my business, and should be none of anyone's business (including the government) what fully consenting adults do with each other.

I voted yes. What's the big deal? We are already considering completely changing the very definition of marriage to allow for those who choose to live "alternate lifestyles" to be able to get married, so why not just go all the damn way and open up the entire institution to any number of consenting adults and be done with it? Hell, there is more historical and even religious documentation in support of polygamy than there is to support homosexuality, so why put one above the other? I don't see how 'enlightened' people can support one and not the other. How are the 'rights' of homosexuals to marry more important or relevant than those of polygamists?

Personally, I think the government should just get out of the "marriage" business altogether.

You, sir, took the words right out of my mouth.

I don't know. Maybe I've just had bad luck with women. But I've often asked myself that same question. That whole idea of a mistress or a second wife just doesn't appeal to me that much. Too much emotional baggage involved (Like I said, maybe I've just had bad luck with women or maybe I just dont have it ' in me').

There have been times when I couldn't help but laugh, when I talked about this subject with some people. This one guy said "But think of the possibility, you could have two chicks at the same time". My reaction was "Ugh...It's hard enough to get two women who like you to get along in the same room, much less in bed together". I said this because at one point in my life I had two women interested in me at the same time. They both knew (about) each other, this was in the early stages, no sex was involed yet, still in the 'getting to know you' stage. And I desided that I had to choose who I wanted to be with. I can just imagine how it would have turned out if I had gotten involed with BOTH of them (Ugh...).

So basicly, I think it's a bad idea (But if people want it to be legal, I'm not going to stand in their way). But if someone wants to do it. All I can say is "Good luck", because they'll need it.

PS: This pole needs a "Not for or against it, just think it's a bad idea" Option.

I guess it would mainly be for rich and/or handsome people.

1 to do cooking, 1 to do cleaning. Imagine the possibilities.

but the ignorance of what bad society comes to had nothing to do with 'personal freedom' to re-define the law to embrace socially destructive actions

Adultery would seem to be less of a problem when you can marry more than one person. Child molestation should not be tolerated, but why would we adopt every idiosyncratic notion of a particular society just because we accept one of their practices like polygamy?

What does inbreeding or closed communities have to do with polygamy?

Finally, are you just looking at polygynous (one husband, multiple wives) communities instead of polygamous communities in general? Perhaps rules that discriminate against women, as polygyny does, are the problem, not the more general concept of polygamy.

Where is thts sh!t coming from? I can't believe there is enough grassroots support for this notion that it is even an issue. And the gay marriage 'movement,' when did this even start? Are there really millions of gays who are in committed relationships that are dying to get married if they could? Or is somebody stirring things up, creating and aggravating issues that are divisive?

eh.

doesn't matter to me.

the idea that polygamy would be a problem assumes that there are women out there who'd be willing to share their husbands. I'm sure there are some, but not enough to create a major social issue out of it.
