Does it feel that L4D was just ported to the pc, it would be really nice if there was an actual server list..😛

Na, I played both the console and the PC version and the PC version is by far much better. The only problem is the random server problems I run into on the PC.

A little.

Here are some of your options:

Open the console and type 'openserverbrowser'

Open server browser button stays on l4d right underneath play single player

If you don't like 3rd part mods or do not trust them then follow what Valve said
You don't need to download any mod, just add -serverbrowser to your command line if you want to enable the serverbrowser on the menu.

what pcslookout said

however, considering the extremely small game sizes (4-8 players max) I actually prefer the dumbed down, console-like connecting methods

besides, considering this game's true value is experienced with friends, the systems involved with joining them are very good and help to offset any disadvantages

This is true as well!

Just depends what your looking for when playing online.

cheers for the command prompt man 😀!

If you don't want to add the menu button you can always just bind a key for the command prompt so you don't have to type it every time you start up the game.

Damn thank you. I always get connected to laggy servers so this is great. thanks

The whole method of joining games could use some polish. If I hit quick match, it tries to join and then the server is filled up during the joining process, it should really just automatically move on to another server instead of kicking back to the main menu with 'server full'. The whole reason I picked quick join was because I didn't especially care which server I end up on.

Other then that, not a bad game. It's one flying vagina away from being "Don't tell Fox: It's AvP3", but still fun.

Totally. Hopefully valve will sort that at some point because its rather annoying.

Yea the joining system annoys the hell out of me. I almost always end up on high lag servers.

I don't mind lacking a server list. Usually I'm not interested in joining one server or another, I just want to play

type "netgraph 3" in the console, that'll report your ping/loss/choke or at least its been this way since cs1.6(probably since the original hl1 but i haven't tried it so i don't know 100% that it started back then), should work with l4d, don't know, haven't tried

Sometimes I feel the same way but it is nice to make sure the server I go onto has a ping at least lower than 300 ms though I prefer 150 ms or less.

Thanks. Will it just appear on top of the game ? Do I type the same command in console again to turn it off if I want?

Is there anyway to move where it appears so it is in a more convenient place or to make it transparent?

I'd also like a better/easier way to tell whether or not the server you're on is modified. Playing vs. last night we ran into one server that made sure to give the infected side (within 60 seconds of starting it seemed) an ultra powerful tank (ie lots of hit points and very tough to bring down). This made it incredibly easy for the tank to own everyone and make the game a race to see who could get the farthest...that is until we finally managed to get enough coordination to bring the tank down - of which made the game completely out of reach because we'd just own them with our tank...

Then the very next server we jump into was modified to constantly send hoard after hoard...and the tanks were green (ie the incredible hulk 😛)

Also, the most common modification to vs. servers is difficulty level. Like campaign mode it can be set to easy through expert, but there's no way to tell without the command console (that I know of). Easy and normal difficulties make the game much harder for infected teams, and advanced and expert make it much harder for survivors. I prefer the "easier" difficulties because it makes it a challenge to stop the survivors and thus you can have a significant difference in outcomes from level to level as the biggest chunk of points will come from how many survivors can make it. Finishing off just one survivor can be a huge and hard fought victory.

netgraph 0 turns it off, no idea about placement.

Seems I can't connect while trying to join through the browser. Always freezes on me.

Try pressing ~ to open console again close that. Then see if there is another small window behind the server browser that says something like client server timed out.

I ordered it for $45 last night, and should be picking it up today.

By the sounds of it, there is no server list. So my question is, who the hell is hosting the games? Having only 4 players has to be doable since everyone (most) have broadband. Or does Valve do it like battle.net?

You can either host a local server or pick from the 1000+ servers that are online when typing open serverbrowser in console.

Yeah, it does have a server browser I hear. But I think it was kind of stupid to not make it available under a button in the main menu. I mean, that is just expected for a PC game. If they want to have their matchmaking system, thats fine...but they should have left the traditional way as a main item as well.
