You don't need to download any mod, just add -serverbrowser to your command line if you want to enable the serverbrowser on the menu.

what pcslookout said
however, considering the extremely small game sizes (4-8 players max) I actually prefer the dumbed down, console-like connecting methods
besides, considering this game's true value is experienced with friends, the systems involved with joining them are very good and help to offset any disadvantages

A little.
Here are some of your options:
Open the console and type 'openserverbrowser'
Open server browser button stays on l4d right underneath play single player
If you don't like 3rd part mods or do not trust them then follow what Valve saidYou don't need to download any mod, just add -serverbrowser to your command line if you want to enable the serverbrowser on the menu.

The whole method of joining games could use some polish. If I hit quick match, it tries to join and then the server is filled up during the joining process, it should really just automatically move on to another server instead of kicking back to the main menu with 'server full'. The whole reason I picked quick join was because I didn't especially care which server I end up on.
Other then that, not a bad game. It's one flying vagina away from being "Don't tell Fox: It's AvP3", but still fun.

Totally. Hopefully valve will sort that at some point because its rather annoying.

I don't mind lacking a server list. Usually I'm not interested in joining one server or another, I just want to play

type "netgraph 3" in the console, that'll report your ping/loss/choke or at least its been this way since cs1.6(probably since the original hl1 but i haven't tried it so i don't know 100% that it started back then), should work with l4d, don't know, haven't tried

Thanks. Will it just appear on top of the game ? Do I type the same command in console again to turn it off if I want?

Seems I can't connect while trying to join through the browser. Always freezes on me.

I ordered it for $45 last night, and should be picking it up today.
By the sounds of it, there is no server list. So my question is, who the hell is hosting the games? Having only 4 players has to be doable since everyone (most) have broadband. Or does Valve do it like battle.net?
