The more expensive i.c.'s , have not only a latch(which is standard for stable output data during shifting) but also have a separate timing circuit that controls the duty cycle of the outputs independently. This would be a register that can be accessed by some control data selection line.

Here is one such an random example :

Fun stuff though...

I am happy today. I got some random samples from microchip, analog devices today to play with :).
And found a perfect H-bridge driver for electromagnetic coils or electrical motors. The TLE-5205-2 from infineon. I tested this ic, it still works while being 110 degrees celcius. It is automotive stuff, meaning it is almost indestructable. 6A H bridge with fault detection in a D2-Pak casing or TO-220 casing(7 legs). Add a nor(brake) or or(high Z) gate between the inputs and you have a pwm + dir control. Only drawback is that the pwm is limited to 2kHz maximum because of the build in charge pump for the high side fets.
My little droid will have lot's of movement with a few of these babies : :)

I got the Ti launchpad kit yesterday but haven't had a chance to play with it.

I got some samples from maxim once and I was shocked where they were sent from. They sent me a single led control max7219 from Taiwan to the USA and paid overnight air to get it here at no charge.

I think they have some regular company transport as standard and a few 100 samples are not bigger then a Ben & Jerry bucket. Altruism rules under a large part of the technicians :). Especially because it is seen as an investment. One of those sample may lead to a design where thousands are needed. Altruism is in effect a long term investment, i think. I am an atheist but even in the bible it says "Treat others as you would like to be treated". I would say it makes sense Jesus was a carpenter if that statement was made by the man:).
