Being a good sportsman is IMHO integral to what professional sports should be about.

Gracious in defeat as well as in your victories.

Lebron showed his immaturity by walking off the floor without congratulating anyone, leaving his teammates hanging out to dry by ditching the post game interviews, and then subsequently trying to rationalize how him being a poor sportsman is not actually bad sportsmanship.

I concur. Everyone here that has said Lebron walking off was poor sportsmanship have never experienced losing or winning a critical match.

Even if Lebron stayed and walked over to a player on the Magic he probably would have given a quick, meaningless handshake without looking them in the eye, is that sportsmanship? Hardly, but I'm sure people would be complaining about that. Damned if you, damned if you don't.

See that's your opinion, my opinion of Lebron has not changed - Lebron is the best ball player in the NBA right now. I also don't view Lebron walking off without a handshake as immaturity, rather disappointment in himself and teammates.

How many of you guys have won or lost a state championship, or tournament? When my team won, we didn't give a fuck what the other team thought. When my team lost, we still didn't give a fuck what the other team thought, we we're pissed and disappointed. Fuck the handshakes, that shit was done by 7th grade.

yup, you're a sore loser who can't accept defeat.

Who do we need more of in this world? asshats like you, or guys who will come over and congratulate you on a hard fought game after you beat them?

You know what, I do not accept defeat, but I'm not a sore loser. I'm a learner. I take my losses as lessons and use them as motivation. I'm competitive when it comes to sports and I don't really care what my opposition thinks of me when I'm on the field. A lot of ball players are like this, and if you have not played a sport competitively then I can see how you have not experienced this. No reason to call me an asshat, you don't even know me man - chill out.

When you lose a big match, you feel worse then someone that has been beaten up. Seriously if you have not been in a similar situation, you can't say a thing. Lebron is beyond competitive in basketball, it's his life and catching an L at the Eastern conference finals is probably a bitter pill to swallow to say the least.

Oh and Lebron took some hard fouls to end up "just" losing to the Magic. Playing 82 games and to have it all end is tough. Just curious, have you or do you currently play any sports?

so that gives him an excuse to walk off like a spoiled brat right?

yes, i play just about every sport out there. unless someone on the other team was an absolute prick (someone like a kobe who throws intentional elbows at me), i will and DO shake hands with everyone pre and post game, win or lose.

While there are probably a dozens of players in the NBA who are content with the pay check they get and could care less what happens there are plenty who are just as competitive and it is their life.

No question about it, some players take losses better than others. Now let me ask you a question, would you rather Lebron go over and quicky shake Dwight Howard's hand without even looking him in the eye or just walk out as he did? I know everyone wants to see that fairy tell ending where all the players are congratulating each other, patting each other on the back and shaking hands but get real. When you put competitive people on a field, someone is going to walk away happy and someone is going to walk away pissed. Obviously, some are more pissed off than others but pissed nonetheless.

anyway, the only sport where it's tradition for the players to shake hands with the other team after losing in the playoffs is hockey. in baseball you don't see the opposing team coming over to the dog pile and congratulating them for winning the world series. i'm pretty sure michael jordan didn't congratulate isiah thomas.

tennis.

and tradition or not, it's still done in basketball by classy players with good sportsmanship.

Don't football players also get together after the game on the field and talk to each other?

I always liked the Pistons in the Bad Boys days, but I was pissed when they walked off the court when Jordan and the Bulls finally beat them. I don't remember Bird and Celts doing that a few years prior when the Pistons were rising.

Wow, you know me so well! Let me congratulate you with a handshake. If your going to take a few words from an internet post to judge me then go ahead man. Nothing I said was wrong by the way, it's just how it is. You should see what the kids in football are learning if you think "fuck the handshakes..." is bad.

boxers hug and congratulate. fighters hug and congratulate. hockey players all congratulate each other.

surely, the global ambassador of basketball could shake his opponents' hands. kobe did it when his team lost the nba finals last year. michael does it when he was getting beat up by the pistons.

it doesnt matter what YOU think or feel about the INTENTION of the gesture... its a display of SPORTSMANSHIP

you OBVIOUSLY have not played organized competitive sports because that is something your coach should have pounded in you as a kid

No, it was implemented as a kid in little league/Boys and Girls club Soccer. I hated it and everyone that played with me and against me knew it. I've been punished for it and I was still put into games. When I got to middle school, the idea of hand shakes is out the window in Maryland for Soccer and to an extent in Baseball/Babe Ruth.

Things my coaches taught:

ASS DOWN ON THAT GROUNDER! You miss a grounder, you run laps.

You lose this game, and none of you will make ODP [or so and so's team]!

Chest over the ball fucker! Shank a pk, and you'll be watching from the bench.

Get that arm down on your curve.

You let that striker get to the ball before you? WTF are you doing? Get your head up and run.

RUN! or GO FUCKER!

Those still stick out in my head.:p I also ran as a PG but was never good enough to play competitively and it still bothers me to this day even though I'm just a 5'8" asian kid. :p

yes, i play just about every sport out there. unless someone on the other team was an absolute prick (someone like a kobe who throws intentional elbows at me), i will and DO shake hands with everyone pre and post game, win or lose.

Now, when you play a game, are you playing to win or just going out there to bullshit with some friends? I know when my buddies went out to play intramural [indoor] soccer matches, we went out to run games and crush teams - that was fun to us. We did not shake hands at all, win or lose - we just played hard. Hell, we didn't even care what the other teams names were. Am I a bad sport for being competitive?

You don't shake everyones hands? How could you not, aren't you playing for the sake of gamesmanship? No? Well, then you're a poor sport. I think you're trying to blur the line between being a poor sport and very competitive - I think the two are very different. A poor sport is someone that plays dirty and when they get beaten off the ball they try to trip you or pull your jersey.

By the way, there have been instances where I have been competitive with my own teammates. I hated this striker, fucker was some exchange student from Brazil, but he could play. I didn't like talking to him, I didn't like passing him the ball, and I never shook his hand or celebrated a goal with him - I just ran back to my position and shoo'ed him like a fly to get the ball and start the game again. I hated this guy but losing is unacceptable to me so I kept dropping the crosses on his feet and forehead. I didn't like him and he didn't like me, am I bad sportsman for not liking my teammate? He would say "No! James is a fucker I hate, but he was a good teammate."

Newsflash buddy, every pro athlete is full of themselves. It comes with the territory. Sure, some of them handle themselves with the media better than others, but you'd be kidding yourself if you think any of your favorite athletes aren't cocky.
