on a similar note, suppose you go to an all you can eat sushi restaurant. is it wrong to just eat the fish off the nigiri sushi and throw away the rice? i see people do it all the time, and cant decide if it's wrong or not.

I think it's wrong. If you wanted sashimi and the buffet place doesn't offer it, go to another place that serves sashimi. It's like just taking frosting off a cake or custard out of a pie.

A friend of mine tried to just take the fish off the rice at a Japanese buffet here in NYC (Minados). He probably did it because they have that "waste" clause on the table. But the chefs saw him and told him he can't do that. I don't know why my friend thought that would have been ok with the restaurant.

I've been thinking of starting a thread about chinese food and rice. I've noticed in the movies and tv shows people always eat right out of the box using chopsticks when they get delivery or takeout. Never in my life have I used chopsticks at home and eaten right out of the chiense food box. I use a plate, put some rice on it, then the food. I am not a barbarian.

Does anyone eat chinese food the way they do in movies?? If these people had done that, maybe they would be ok. Maybe the plate is the problem.
HAHAHA, I have often thought of this also. No one eats out of the container but in a movie they obvioulsy do it so you KNOW they are eating Chinese takeout. If they simply dumped it on a plate and ate normal it looses it's imagery. Funny how hollywood stretches reality to make a point.
I'll do that with Thai food if it's take-out and I'm just going back to the office.

Why don't they order sashimi instead?

it's a sushi buffet, they dont have menus to order from and you just pick from what they put out on the buffet line

Most sushi buffet places I tried had sashimi (basically just a plate full of fish + some veggie

As a college student, I do the buffet thing often. The only situation where I'll allow myself to leave ****** on the plate is if it's ABSOLUTELY NASTY, or if it's my last plate at a pizza buffet (and then, I'll only leave the crust, and usually sit there for a few minutes, grab another soda, and finish that off, too.)

My friends have no problem not eating the crust to ANY of their pizza at these buffets. It appears to be a Pennsylvania thing. The management at those places doesn't care (though I suspect they may start at some of the older places, because a new upstart with cheaper prices, better pizza, better service, and WAY better atmosphere just opened up, and is doing so well they're opening another one on the west side, and the old places are hurting BADLY for business)
