on a similar note, suppose you go to an all you can eat sushi restaurant. is it wrong to just eat the fish off the nigiri sushi and throw away the rice? i see people do it all the time, and cant decide if it's wrong or not.
I think it's wrong. If you wanted sashimi and the buffet place doesn't offer it, go to another place that serves sashimi. It's like just taking frosting off a cake or custard out of a pie.
A friend of mine tried to just take the fish off the rice at a Japanese buffet here in NYC (Minados). He probably did it because they have that "waste" clause on the table. But the chefs saw him and told him he can't do that. I don't know why my friend thought that would have been ok with the restaurant.
