Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this? Please read more about the "history of teaching math":

Teaching Math In 1950

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

Teaching Math In 1970

A logger exchanges a set "L" of lumber for a set of "M" of money. The cardinality of set "M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100 dots representing the elements of the set "M." The set "C," the cost of production, contains 20 fewer points than set "M." Represent the set "C" as a subset of set "M." Answer this question: What is the cardinality of the set "P" of profits?

Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math In 1990

By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the forest birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down the trees. (There are no wrong answers)

Teaching Math In 2000

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $120. How does Arthur Anderson determine that his profit margin is $60?

Old and misleading. As long as you're proferring thinly-disguised but ill-informed social commentary, why don't you just repost that fake Norman Mailer bs.

ha ha ha. Old enough to remember new math. Also old enough to remember seeing this joke before, but it's still a good one - thanks!

I like the good old days when kids had no access to calcuators.. Calculators are instruments of the devil.. lol (making our kids rely on a machine rather than their noggin)

I for one, loved doing long division and multiplication.. do they even teach that anymore ?
I had a great math teacher that inspired and made it fun and interesting (a.k.a passion to teach, and knowing how to teach well).. if you don't get math when you're first exposed to it... your screwed i guess.

Cliffnotes: Calculators are making kids stupid :Q

You do understand that it was an attempt at humour??

If you can't mock the past, how do you correct it's mistakes??

I've heard it many times, several from Brutuskend. I understand that he enjoys posting jokes, but sometimes one wishes he would find more original ones than simply ones he got in the mail. No one enjoys it when some fool who just discovered the internet comes into ATOT and says "Hey, gyz the funnist joke evar!", then posts some bs he got from his aunt who has nothing better to do than send forwards all day.

He's posted some really good ones, some recently, but this one is a bit old.

And I should add, it's not "mocking the past", it's a closet-politically-hypocondraic conservative's half-assed attempt at mocking educational reform.

Good God, lighten up before it's too late. Some people just have to make a mountain out of a molehill...

i did haha.

Seriously tho, I doubt he talks like that in real life. I bet it took him like 20 min to just think of that "witty" sentence to make himself sound all smart and shiz.

ive been in the position of that girl you talked about... when youre working, you turn off all brain cells. you punch the number into the cash register and it tells you how mcuh to give the person back. when people dig for change, it throws you off. that said, it takes me 5 seconds to add the change to the total on the register...

and by no means am i stupid. im 'gifted' lol.
