I will interrupt this post for new data as of Oct. 21, 2014, as the iPad Air 2 specs have been confirmed now:

https://twitter.com/gruber/status/524727681334935552

John Gruber said:
iPad Air 2, the specs:

3-core CPU (Geekbench: 1813 single-core, 4539 multi-core), 2 GB RAM

Also, there are now multiple iPad5,4 / iPad Air 2 entries in the Geekbench browser:

---

As of Remembrance Day, AnandTech is also reporting that the A8X GPU is an 8-cluster design, which is semi-custom, and not the GX6650.

Looks like the old ones. Dunno about the 12" MaxiPad.

Ha, the timing was certainly curious... that said, as much as Android fans hope the new Nexus devices represent the launch of the year, the iPads and new Macs are probably going to overshadow it all, no matter what the timing is like.

I'm going to be pretty pissed if they don't update the Mac Mini.

Don't expect the 12.9" iPad until next year. And rumor is the Air and not the Mini are getting a change in hardware. The Mini only gets Touch ID and spec bumps.

Would any tablet update these days get anyone excited? On both sides of the house, tablet updates are even duller than phone updates.

And for the love of all that's good, please don't make the cameras on these more powerful. I smh every time I see tourists holding up iPads and taking photos.

Over/Under on a RAM upgrade?

Board leaks suggest that at least the new iPad Air could have 2GB of RAM... not sure about the iPad mini, but I'd expect a similar amount if the smaller tablet costs the same $399 as before.

Not sure why this bothers you. Some tourists are older people who use flip phones and their tablets have become their vacation cameras.

2 GB of RAM and an even thinner and lighter iPad Mini would get me excited. Sure. It's embarrassing how bad my Mini runs at times on iOS 8.

Now that we know we have Touch ID, all I need to see is 2 GB RAM to be convinced to pre-order.

So pretty much just has the fingerprint reader. my mind is blown.

However small you might think that is, imho it's a bigger upgrade than a Android tablet where the upgrade was 2012 one Snapdragon 800, 2013 upgraded one Snapdragon 801 ZOMG!?!?!

Sure, if you wanted to ignore the OS upgrades.

Snapdragon 800 was not available until the second half of 2013.

Shit my bad, what I said is totally invalid because I don't know when a chipset came out...

And I shouldn't talk shit about Android tablets, I mean getting an upgrade from Snapdragon 800 to Snapdragon 801's night and day different

Other than Touch ID and 2GB RAM, there really is nothing more to do for the iPad. "Burst Photos" being a feature on a tablet is proof enough that there's very little left to change.

Heh I thought it would be self explanatory. Watching a dozen tourists surrounding the Mona Lisa with 10" screens held up is both hilarious and annoying. It's the "bring your iMac to Starbucks" for cameras.

It's honestly kind of surreal when you do see multiple people in a crowd taking pictures with a big tablet. It would be funny if pretty much every person had one. Would be a good flash mob prank to get 100+ people with tablets to show up at otherwise small events and have all of their tablets out to take pictures.

That would be kind of silly. I would love to see that.:)

That's a pretty ridiculous comparison. I agree it was weird at first but now it's something we simply have to accept. I think it's weird to not want a tablet to get better in any way.

And while I personally don't want to go around snapping photos with my iPad, I can see how it appeals to some given you have such a huge screen to frame your shot.

Come on dude - I was obviously being a bit facetious with my original comment and of course every aspect of new devices will be improved.

But it'll be impossible for me (and I think most others) to stop rolling my eyes at folks taking public photos using a full size tablet. It's here to stay for sure but it doesn't make it any less amusing/annoying.

I guess it depends on the situation. At concerts, yeah, I think it's pretty ridiculous. But I was at the Vatican museum recently and tons of people were taking photos with iPad's. Didn't bother me one bit.

People taking photos with iPads are idiots.
People taking vacation photos with iPads are bigger idiots.

At some point, people need to stop. No, I will never accept that as the norm, not in public.
