Another vote for the CRT

i figure the viewable on the CRT is probably the same as the LCD... and the LCD eats up so little desktop space, and is freaking sweet.

is say LCD for sure.

I voted LCD, but now that I actually read your OP ;) I say CRT... because

1 you have the space for it
2 it could heat up your room this winter :)

LCD vote here. I have a 21" CRT as my main monitor and a 15" LCD as a secondary. To me, pics look way better on the LCD (MUCH brighter and vibrant). I still would have been on the fence but recently I played some UT 2K4 on my friends 2001FP, looked a fair better than my 21" CRT... Res scaling is annoying but I don't think it is that bad...

Newer LCDs scale well and have excellent response times. This along with their inherent advantages of smaller size, sharpness at high resolutions (particularly through DVI), lower heat/radiation, and less eye strain would make me say LCD. But if I were a much bigger gamer I'd have to go with CRT - the color purity and gamut on CRTs is still light years ahead of LCD which is still stuck in 8-bit (that too for only the best panels).

Dude, what's all this talk about needing to be able to play games in LCD's native res? I play HL2 and just about any game in non-native resolutions on both my 2001FP and 2005FPW and they look spectacular. Non-native res is fine on LCDs.

I would definitely get the 2001FP. as far as I know, the screen door effect was mainly on the first runs of the monitor, and mine doesn't have anything like it (bought it a year ago this month). Dead pixels are always a risk, but I've seen 0 dead pixels on either of my 20" ones from Dell.

I've also never noticed any trouble with colors, though I might not be the most astute observer of pallettes.

I would go with the LCD. It takes up a lot less room, and even if you have enough room, more desktop real estate is better. The electricity costs are also less, although that's kind of negligible. Also, I game alot in one sitting, so when I'm playing a few hours, I find that the CRT is more harsh on my eyes than an LCD

I haven't ever had a dead pixel, though I hear that they suck.

Oh yeah, what video card do you have. If you don't have a video card that can realistically play the newer games well at 1600x1200, then I would also get the LCD, as the resolution debate then becomes moot.

I wish desktop LCD's had what notebooks had.. high res and whatever xtrabright screen tech each company respectively has. Oh, heat and space are a concern for me as well.

Hmm... well I use my notebook, so...

I had a 21" CRT and went with the Dell 2001FP. I don't do video or photo editing and I like having the extra room the LCD provides.
That said, I voted NEC since you have the room.

LCDs if you plan to work on your computer alot. It causes less strain on my eyes AND is frees up lots of deak space. If you care only about gaming... .eh... whatever your call.

Is widescreen really worth it if you don't watch a lot of movies? I can get the 2005FPW for the same $599 shipped.
