LCD blemish

I just bought a new LCD monitor from Newegg and there is a blemish on the screen. I don't know the technical term for it, banding maybe? It's very noticible and distracting when I watch movies that are dark. It's a small blemish that is in the middle of the screen up top about 1 1/4 inches long.

I'm wondering if there is a software that will let me fix this or I have to send it back to Newegg for a replacement? Is this thing common on LCDs? I've tried taking pics of it, but it's very tough to detect it in pictures.

Update, just got it.
I finally was able to take a pic of it, it's not very good but it shows this mark somewhat. Here it is. It's on the right of Peter Moore's head.

Another update.
I just asked Newegg to get a replacement for me, but they're giving me the runaround. Here's what they wrote back to me

"Unfortunately, as stated on our website in order for us to provide you with a replacement, you need to have 8 or more dead pixels. Therefore, we recommend you to contact the manufacture, to see if they can further assist you. If they do not assist you with a replacement, or assistance on how improving the view on the monitor, please contact us and provide us with a reference number from the manufacture, showing that you have contacted them already."

I asked for a replacement from newegg once before for a hard drive that failed but I canceled that because I use the freezer trick to recover info and I thought that would disqualify me. So, I don't really know how to handle this. I know people here like newegg and use them more than me. What do I do now?

Another update. July 05
I called Newegg customer service earlier today. They said the only way they can replace my LCD is if it has dead pixels which doesn't apply to me. So, I have to get a replacement from the manufacturer. I have never done this before, do you know how long it might take? The company I bought my LCD from is named Chimei, it's located in Taiwan. I would prefer to do this through Newegg, but I have no other options at this point.

It's about an inch to the right of his head, above the ears. There's a vertical blemish there. I've taken a bunch of pics and this is the one that is most noticible, but it's very clear when looking at the LCD itself.

Can you see it while the monitor is turned off? If you can then its not the pixels and looks to be a defect in the screen itself. If you cannot see it while the monitor is off then try running different colors on the screen via different backrounds on your desktop. If you notice it more on certain colors it may be a row of bad pixels. Either way i would prolly send it back.

Banding refers to something different. That just looks like a defect or damage. Assuming the packaging wasn't damaged, Newegg ought to swap it for you. If the box was damaged visibly, then you might have to go through the shipper, but Newegg will probably be good enough to just replace it.

A blemish of that size is more than a pixel or two - it is a whole gaggle of them. Return the monitor to Newegg. It evidently was damaged in shipment. Any scuff marks on the box or dents in the styrofoam packing?

i see it now, looks like a scratch or something, like a white line on black wall...but yes, try different backgrounds, it could be a row of bad pixels...

The lighter the background it's barely noticible, but the darker it is it's very noticible. I thought I could live with it when I first bought it, but I've been watching a bunch of movies and tv shows on it and it's very distracting. When the LCD is off, you can't see this blemish at all, so it must be a bad row of pixels like a couple people are saying.

Thanks everyone for the help. I'll definitely get a replacement from newegg. I just hope they won't make me paying for shipping or restocking or any bs fees.

Generally Newegg is very understanding of these things, and if those are indeed dead pixels, you definitely have more than 8.

I suggest giving them a call and explain your situation. I've sent back a couple of things to Newegg, and they've always been understanding.

I explained to them through email that I have a bunch of bad pixels that give the LCD a discoloration, but they keep saying this "at least 8 dead pixels" bs all the time. I hope things are different when I give them a call tomorrow.

Did you attach the image with your email? It might be best to circle the area that's bad using Paint or something. Avoid using JPG or loss-compression as much as possible until you are ready to send.

I sent them a link to the pic I posted on this thread.

They don't really look like "dead" pixels, as much as they look like "bad" pixels. Annoying, yes...I know a guy going thru a similar issue with a laptop (but he dropped his machine, and while it looks similar, it's considerably worse visually, so...).

I've actually seen several LCD screens with this kind of problem. They're usually the cheaper ones. Some of the lame manufacturers may say this is normal for X percentage of monitors. Some people aren't bothered at all since they're just doing spreadsheets or whatever...they aren't looking at deep blacks in a DVD playback.

In this case, unless you can show damaged shipment, you might have to go thru the manufacturer instead of Newegg. Dead pixels means they are locked on one color (or simply black) and when it comes to LCDs, nearly all outlets are pretty committed to what they will take back. I believe Samsung is the only one that warranties one dead pixel. If you have a long history with Newegg (and who doesn't...) they may take some pity. Good luck.

I have never sent anything back to the original manufacturer before. It'll probably take a long time to get a replacement. I hope I don't have to do that. The LCD I bough is pretty kick ass, except for this blemish. You're right, it is one of the cheaper brands. It's a Chimei, I had never heard of this company before until Newegg had a special deal on their Widescreen.

I think that when I buy my first LCD I will get it at a B&M so I can return it without a hassle.

LRguy,

Just dropping by to see how your LCD situation is going. I know you've been working with customer service on a resolution, but sounds like you still need some additional assistance.

If you'd like, feel free to send us a PM with your Sales Order Number (SO#) and we'll look into this further.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Newegg guy to the rescue :)

It looks like the pixels are bad to me, like they aren't fully responding to signals to change so its leaving what looks like to me a "pale" spot.
