You know, Mexicans are some of the most hard working, under appreciated people I've ever encountered.. They do work that most Americans would pass up and do it with pride.. Where does the stereotype of being lazy come from?

There was a sociological report some years back on why people thought black people were lazy. The most prevalent answer was that people saw them hanging out on the street corner during normal working hours.

So the sociologists investigated. Turns out many of the people on street corner were employed in professions where they worked outside normal working hours like dishwashers at restaurants, night janitors, etc.
Furthermore, they found that black people were more likely not to own homes so they had no place large enough to socialize except outdoors. Which became a cultural phenomena of black people.

And, btw, they found that black people (this was 20-30 years ago) couldn't afford or get loans for homes so they put their money into cars which is where the stereotype of black people in big flashy cars came from.

I agree that most Mexicans I have encountered are far from lazy.
I do have a problem with the phrase "they do the work that Americans won't do." That is not true at all. They just do the work Americans won't do for the extremely low wages that are usually offered for the job in question.

So what you're saying about Mexicans is that because of the low wages associated with such jobs............. they do the work that Americans won't do?

Ok, I see your point but I am trying to say that the wages are too low.

Americans would do the jobs, they just demand more money, which they are legally entitled to simply for being citizens.

I don't know, but it's been around for a long time. I think I remember first seeing it in an old Looney Toons cartoon, back when that level of 'racism' was acceptable.

Edit: Check It, who knows how old that is.

The lazy Mexicans are the ones who work in the Mexican food joints. But yeah, a lot of Mexicans work harder than most White/Black people I know.

You do realize it is possible to be of Mexican decent and legally be in this country right? They're not all illegals.

They certainly did close most shops in Naples for a few hours around noon when I was there and it is my understanding this is common in Mediterranian cultures due to the climate. It has nothing to do with laziness but may have that negative implication to folks from cultures that just see it as napping.

I thought the exact same thing, in the states they always seem to work really hard. Then I went to Mexico. Holy shit there are A LOT of lazy people down there. They basically do nothing unless you bribe them.

Mexicans who got into USA = Not Lazy
50% of Mexicans in Mexico = Not Lazy
50% of Mexicans in Mexico = Extremely Lazy and corrupt

It's not unique to Mexico. It is standard fair in all Spanish settled countries (and some Asian ones). It's definitely climate related. Noon hours are just too hot to work, so they take a nap.

If I remember correctly, in Argentina it's 1-3, stores reopen at 3 and open til 7.

I'd flip burgers if they paid me $100 an hour, but then people would riot because of $100 burgers and $25 strawberries.

Anyone would do any job given that they were paid enough.
Now a white gardener... never seen that in my life before.

Well, the company I work for is a straight-laced non-profit and all of our staff are, of course, paid legal wages and given full health care benefits... Our janitorial staff is 100% mexican (I'd assume all legal as well). The wages are legal, but too low for your average "American" to take, I assume.

And the janitors are all kind people who are new to this country but trying their best to learn English and better themselves and their family. I wasn't trying to belittle the American worker, but lazy immigrants of any ethnicity - I just don't see it. My parents were hard working Asian-americans and these Mexicans seem to be working just as hard, yet these stereotypes exist.
