I lived in Brazil for several years.

Every day after lunch almost everybody take their 'siesta' (especially outdoor manual labor jobs). Roughly 90 minutes of laying down in the shade/under the truck. There are a few reasons for this. One reason is they don't eat much (if anything) for breakfast, so by the time lunch time rolls around they are starving and gorge themselves with tons of rice/beans/meat/whatever. After the gorge, it's only natural to become tired and difficult to work until you digest a bit. The second reason is generally the hottest part of the day with the least amount of cloud cover. Another reason is it is not only socially acceptable, but it is expected and is a cultural norm. Their bodies are trained to need the siesta before functioning properly.

Now as to whether they actually work hard at the times when they are not napping, I have mixed feelings about that. I've seen plenty of "how many (insert race of choice here) does it take to dig a hole? Three. One to dig, and two to watch". It was a very rare occasion when I met anybody that I felt worked harder than me. And I met A LOT of people, and don't consider myself to be a particularly hard worker either.

I know I'm talking about Brazil here and not Mexico, but virtually every country south of the border shares the same culture in this regard.

I've worked with people of a number of different backgrounds, from Russians, Indians, Chinese, Japanese to Mexicans. One of my clients years ago ran a major nursery that supplied Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowe's, etc. They hired migratory teams of Mexicans almost exclusively, and they'd work in 110+ heat with jeans, hats and long-sleeve shirts due to the toxins in the spray they'd use.

Literally, it was so hot in these greenhouses that I would walk in and have to leave in about 2 minutes because I felt like I was suffocating. We're talking 125+F in there with no air movement.

Anyway, I produced a biometric system for them because they would have some Mexicans that would clock in for a dozen of their friends/family as they slept back at home. When I first had the systems installed, workers destroyed them by pouring Coke all over the equipment. This continued for quite some time. They were a lot of fun though, and despite the fact that they didn't like my introducing such a system they made some incredible tacos with fresh meat right there on the farm.

Honestly, the laziest people I've ever witnessed were unionized workers at some major tire manufacturers I had as a client. People would be sleeping on the job, in the rafters or just not show up at all. The whole culture seemed depressing and lazy.

Me too. Greatest idea ever. I take a nap every afternoon that I can.

Power naps or normal short naps are good for ur body, it'll help u get back into focus and sort of "restart" ur body.

I'm mexican, I do agree with the OP, but there's still a fair share of lazy mexicans but you don't really see them hanging out on corners, sitting around outside the house etc... hell, I myself consider myself a lazy mexican, I'll admit that, even my father wonders how I came out like this and he is really hardworking

Living in So Cal, you see mexicans working everywhere, lots of gardening trucks driving around, landscaping companies etc, pretty much all ran by mexicans.

Probably the siestas.

Where the fuck does this stereotype come from? I have never ever seen a Mexican take a "siesta", our naps are like everybody elses.

If I remember correctly, in Argentina it's 1-3, stores reopen at 3 and open til 7.

The siesta closing time is more predominant in middle and southern mexico, you will not see that on the bordering states. Ive been down to Michoacan and Guadalajara, almost everything except big businesses and stores closed for 1-3 hrs around 12 or 1 pm, I was amazed at such a thing, but they would close a few hrs later to compensate for being closed for a few hrs.

I agree that most Mexicans I have encountered are far from lazy.
I do have a problem with the phrase "they do the work that Americans won't do." That is not true at all. They just do the work Americans won't do for the extremely low wages that are usually offered for the job in question.

Anyone would do any job given that they were paid enough.
Now a white gardener... never seen that in my life before.

then why do we have minimum wage?

Americans would do the jobs, they just demand more money, which they are legally entitled to simply for being citizens.

You do realize it is possible to be of Mexican decent and legally be in this country right? They're not all illegals.

Soo, that would make them lazy Americans then?

back in the day before air conditioning... people living in warmer climes would take a noon break during the hottest part of the day.

ever pull up and try to hire a couple illegals at home depot? you wont get anyone in that truck for under 9 bucks an hour... how is that under min wage?

for the record, i used to work for a guy that would hire them for crap labor, i didnt do it and i quit when it became a regular thing.

and mexicans arent lazy, either are puerto ricans. i had a puerto rican employee (yes, he was actually from there) and he always bitched that we didnt have a 2 or 3 hour siesta at 2pm. used to crack me up.

The stereotype comes from the kids upon kids upon kids of families that use them to collect welfare checks while being lugged around in SUVs because they can't fit into small sedans.

If your stereotype is being specific towards the working class, then you're right that the Mexicans that actually work are very good workers. There are hard working, honest Mexicans that I personally know, then there are lazy ass douchebags good for nothing welfare wasting POS, which I suppose exist in all races.

And how does giving the trend a reason make it not true exactly?

I hate their 17th century way of life. It's expected that the wife needs to pop out 10 kids, while the husband only works while he is at "work". If she needs help, it's the wife's sister or mom coming over for the day with their 10 kids to help out. Meanwhile Jose is about to pass out from drinking too much beer while watching futbol with 20 kids running around muck around him, in the yard and out in the street. I have never seen so many toddlers walk out on the street un-attended.

Well, the company I work for is a straight-laced non-profit and all of our staff are, of course, paid legal wages and given full health care benefits... Our janitorial staff is 100% mexican (I'd assume all legal as well). The wages are legal, but too low for your average "American" to take, I assume.

I'm an American, and I worked as a janitor. I also pulled weeds, mixed concrete, and worked on an assembly line. The "jobs Americans won't do" line is a load of crap.

 Take a trip to El Monte, or Pomona CA. You'll never find another close-knit community and what America is really about until you've been to those places. Ironically, I found America in those places more so than any other place, because those cities generally restrict corp/chains to come into them; so you'll see shops working hard for your business, not waged-based lazy employees who only care about their next paycheck (and they'll rationalize that the more they are lazy, the more hours they require to do a job, therefore, get paid more :disgust:)

You'll never see the amount of hardworking, mom-pop shops in any other rural community other than more ultra-rich upscale places (La Jolla, CA).

Your generalization irks me because I don't see that kind of family here in So. Cal. My dad employs a number of skilled mexicans in his company (all with either papers or naturalized) and they are the hardest, most non-entitled people I've ever met. They are a blast to hang out with at the bar though. ... Phokking people know how to dance/party.

Oh, and to the OP though,
"they do the work that Americans won't do." ... I donno about that. I've seen plenty of Americans (if you mean by Americans as in White people, since the Mexicans I've mentioned ARE Americans...).. ahem ya white people.. I've seen plenty of white dudes work the usual blue-collar/janitorial jobs. Heck, at my office, our janitor is a white guy.

Also, we are the human race. I'm Korean by blood, but born in the US. What, I'm not American all of a sudden? My dad's employees: They're not American?

I am proud to represent MY nation when I'm oversees as a civilian on a US Navy Research vessel; showing our US scientific might, resources, and knowledge to our visiting nations. The fact that there is an argument here on AT in 2009 about just race in general in the US belittles my representation of the nation I work for.

Nothing but respect for the South Americans who bust their ass here for peanuts. I used live in a town where they would get up at 6:00am and line up for a chance to do shit work from some guy in a pickup truck while capable lazy-ass Americans sat on their ass and collected welfare checks.

And do you know why those jobs pay such poor wages? It's because greedy corporations contracted with companies who hired cheap labor from Mexico to clean their buildings to cut costs and maximize profits.

I also agree though that the Mexicans I've met and know are not lazy. Honestly, they are some of the hardest working people I've known.

I never said anything about them while at work.
I do live in southern California, and I see it all the time and it sickens me. I am half hispanic myself and I am proud my family broke away from those stupid traditions.

I'll never defend a lifestyle that treats woman like shit.

Are you the same guy that posted in ATOT how great downtown Pomona food was?

wait a minute...are those guys lining up legal? i bet if they are legal, they'd be collecting welfare checks as well...along with their 10 kids...right?

not here to stir up trouble...but we got to look at both extremes here...there are lazy ppl and hard working ppl...american or not...and i think we americans complain too much and not do anything about it...
