Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Poet Who Nurtured the Beats, Dies at 101
An unapologetic proponent of “poetry as insurgent art,” he was also a publisher and the owner of the celebrated San Francisco bookstore City Lights.
He published Ginsberg's Howl and was arrested and prosecuted for pornography. He was acquitted.
I've been in his long-running bookstore in SF, City Lights. He was an integral part of the flowering of the beat poets in the 50's, and he kept the damn light on for decades and decades after.
