Apparently, a bunch of children are getting sick, some with conditions like asthma are winding up in intensive care. And, according to news reports, it's spreading.

Nothing from the CDC on it; nothing from NYS Dept of Health on it (so sayeth the wife). So, it's probably overblown, but it looks like it's just in time for the media who needs a new story to keep the ratings up.

its no joke. a family in one of our multiples support group had all three of their triplets in intensive care recently. How wide spread it is I have no idea

Something about this story feels out of place for me. I don't know a thing about virology but the only thing I got from the small amount of attention I paid to this is that [it feels like] only children are affected? If not then they did a good job at using children to senationalize it.

That one is starting to look pretty ugly off the bat actually, but doesn't kill.

Compared to the Ebola thing still spreading killing people, that's a minor problem.

NYS Dept of Health just issued a bulletin a few minutes ago. More or less, "we're aware and monitoring, this is what it does, this is where it is,..."

Severe Respiratory Illness Associated with Enterovirus D68 — Missouri and Illinois, 2014
Early Release
September 8, 2014 / 63(Early Release);1-2

On August 19, 2014, CDC was notified by Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, of an increase (relative to the same period in previous years) in patients examined and hospitalized with severe respiratory illness, including some admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. An increase also was noted in detections of rhinovirus/enterovirus by a multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay in nasopharyngeal specimens obtained during August 5–19. On August 23, CDC was notified by the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital in Illinois of an increase in patients similar to those seen in Kansas City. To further characterize these two geographically distinct observations, nasopharyngeal specimens from most of the patients with recent onset of severe symptoms from both facilities were sequenced by the CDC Picornavirus Laboratory. Enterovirus D68* (EV-D68) was identified in 19 of 22 specimens from Kansas City and in 11 of 14 specimens from Chicago. Since these initial reports, admissions for severe respiratory illness have continued at both facilities at rates higher than expected for this time of year. Investigations into suspected clusters in other jurisdictions are ongoing.

Real deal. Rocked IL. one school had over 70 kids out at once. Lots hospital admits with this one.

There are a number of viruses that follow that pattern. They infect a lot of children and like lots of viral infections, some cases are worse than others. Adults might get them but the symptoms can differ due to age related things. Also, some adults will be immune because they had it as a child.

So a fairly severe respiratory virus with lingering effects, kids going to the ICU and a handful dying, and yet you're dismissing it as sensationalized just because it isn't getting much push from the CDC or NYS DoH? Really?

There's a difference between reporting on, and sensationalizing. Note the article linked above - FIRST CHILD...

Since the day I started this thread, how many children have died in car accidents? How many children have die in bike accidents? How many children have died while playing football? And now, 1st kid dies of this particularly severe cold (according to those bold headlines.)

Getting sick isn't a laughing matter, and since I started this thread, Ebola (1 death in this entire country) has completely dominated the headlines. And, it has been sensationalized to hell and back for the sake of news ratings.

Agree with all the above. Would like to hear occasional news about other health issues and dangerous diseases than just sensationalized coverage of a single epidemic. Especially considering that enterovirus has killed more people than Ebola here... not that Ebola isn't important to contain and fight worldwide.

Thought about posting about this in one of the many Ebola threads, but it deserves its own thread, anyway.

I kind of see what he's getting at though. The media doesn't usually tell the whole tale. Did the children that passed away suffer from other complications such as asthma, diabetes, etc., that make fighting this off more challenging? If so, it is no different than something like the flu that adversely impacts people with other complicating illnesses.

I have two young children myself, would be nice to know if my healthy, well kept grade schoolers could die from this or if they'll be okay because I feed them, clean them, etc.

Kids with asthma are at risk more than the general population. Relevant to parents of kids with asthma (or other serious respiratory conditions), especially in this area (New York) and in the city where a greater percentage of kids have asthma.

I'm reading the article you posted right now and see that. Good article indeed.

Previous news articles pretty much keep to "Tonight, another kid dies of E68! Is your child at risk of death?! Stay tuned to the compelling, advertising filled conclusion that has some random person with a medical title at the bottom of the screen leave you more confused than ever! Tonight at six!!!!" 😀
