The more I read these posts the more I worry I'll regret waiting. Those motherboards with 4 PCI-e slots look so expensive. Should I wait or should I buy? I'm worried if I buy now everything I bought will be extremely inferior. What if prices aren't so bad and I just spent tons of money on a Yorkfield? What if Hyper-Threading brings huge improvements? I'm so tired of waiting and the more I wait, the more attractive a Q9550 is looking.

Waiting is never a bad thing unless it costs you money to wait.

If your computer is going to make you money, and by not having it you are thus losing money in effect, then waiting is bad.

So you wait for Nehalem only to find out the entry cost are ridiculously high...so you buy whatever the best LGA775 system is that your money can buy for you then. You'll still end up with more computer than if you bought today whether it ends up being a Nehalem system or a Yorkfield system.

Today's yorkfields are more expensive then tomorrow's. How do you lose by biding your time?

Too many people were telling me not to get it and I was tired of waiting. Then Fry's had a Q9550 for $279. So I just bought it. I figure Bloomfiled is still gonna be quadcore and 45nm. I might as well wait for an octocore 32nm. I'm having trouble choosing my motherboard. :frown: The MSI x48C Platinum looks really nice, but the reviews for it on NewEgg don't. I need a motherboard with DDR3 support and 2 PCI-e slots just in case.

If I were in your position, I would've waited until a week and a half after Nehalem is released (10 days or so) to see how the people at XtremeSystems, HardOCP, and AnandTech are doing with them. This is what I usually do whenever I buy new hardware at launch, although this time around I'm gonna be a first-day adopter so I'll let you know what happens

Might I add that the 2.66GHz and 2.93GHz Bloomfields are supposed to be replaced next fall with CPUs from the LGA 1160 socket...I find it quite odd. At least the Core i7 Extreme Bloomfield isn't going anywhere for a year and a half.

what? you said you would rather get ECS mobo + CPU combo since you don't overclock. why waste money on the mobo? you're gonna overclock now?

You don't *need* DDR3 memory since you're not going nehalem. Since you refuse to overclock, getting an X48 motherboard and DDR3 memory is just throwing money away. Getting 4GB of DDR2 and a nforce 750i SLI motherboard would save you at least $200 without really sacrificing any performance.

lower timings
lower power consumption
more throughput bandwidth for memory intensive applications
lower bottlenecks on Tri-SLi equipped rigs and high resolution gaming (1920x1200, 2560x1600, etc)

Thats pretty sad selling your comp before you even have firm release dates. Now you have no desktop to play with....I did the same with my Nikon D80 in April anticipating summer release. The d90 is starting to be avail around now. Damn you technologies!

Look at the bright side. Deneb won't be available at all for the holiday hardware buying orgy.

From all the excitement nehalem has generated I agree with IDC. Either be the very first to pre-order it or risk severe egg-gouging. If it's $400+ for the 2.66 chip I'll stick with Deneb or Yorkfield for the forseeable future.

Don't do what I did when Kentsfield QX6700 first came out, waiting like a rabid rat hitting the refresh button every 5 minutes to see if Newegg had it in stock only to have the privilege of paying thru the nose for it when it finally came available. (well it was for my business, so really my customers would have appreciated paying me less for my services had my services not required me procuring a $1500 CPU ).

See if you can't hook up with the Tankguy thru PM and get yourself on an unofficial internal waiting list to queue up for pre-orders and the like.

As you'll find in your later years in life, if you want anything in life that doesn't involve waiting until it's a commodity (including a job) then its all done thru networking and knowing the right people and giving those people a reason to give a damn about you versus some other fool (I failed at this myself, obviously, looking at my checking account statement this month)
