Latency issues with DSL. Frustrated=/

Here's my problem. Seems like around prime time(7-11pm) my ping goes to shit. I play two games, bf3 and quake 2. I have DSL via windstream(all I can get around here). Yesterday I played quake 2 literally all day with a 50 ping(chicago server). Around 730pm it went to 130 and did not come below 100 the rest of the evening. It does this all the time. I'm not sure what causes it but it's getting annoying.

Currently I'm on a 1.5MB plan which I only download at around 150kb. They are upping it to the 3.0(biggest I can get I believe) tomorrow. He said I should see a difference but I shouldn't. Not sure what he meant by that, perhaps the latency issues will be fixed.

From what I understand DSL is a dedicated download/upload correct? I'm not sure what to do or check or even call and tell the DSL company my problem. I just know I'm sick of my ping jumping up over 100 and staying arounod 130+ every evening while I play quake 2.

FWIW:

OS: win 7 ultimate, 64 bit
DSL modem->router->wired to my pc. I've tried bypassing the router and got the same results.

Try pinging against other destinations (4.2.2.1, for instance) to make sure that you're not dealing with something on the server-side.

I play on a few different q2 servers and when my ping goes bad, it goes bad for all of them.

Are they all in the same geographic area? 4.2.2.1 is in california, so it'd not likely be affected by congestion in Chicago.

That said, have you tried calling the provider? They may have a congested uplink somewhere or they may have some other issue in your neighborhood.

First try to find out where the "Sloe down occurs"., it might be totally out of your control, being a problem with the servers of the gaming service.

Download and run this freeware, http://www.d3tr.de/download.html

Ping the server's IP using the 3D Trace.

This the way to look at the results when using the As List view.

As can be seen in this trace the major slowdown is after the 6 hop which far away from the control of the user.

You can also try pathping too, it will give you a little more information on where you are breaking down in the route to the destination. It works a little better than a standard ping (just a response or not) and tracert (which shows you the route your connection takes) and gives you both. A while back, I used it to trouble shoot a problem I was having with latency issues, and all of the failed packets were between my router and the next hop, so I knew it wasn't my computer, or the router itself, rather my aging cable modem. Once it was replaced, no more issues.

I would call them if I were you and get them to look at the margins on your line, ask for a ticket to be opened up, and get them to look for errors on your connection.

Find out if they have the your port set to interleaving, interleaving will add latency to the line if it's turned on and if you are having line problems.

Also remember that you have a 1.536 megabit connection, and your downloads are in kilobytes. Your download speeds are close to what you are paying for.

1536000/8(bits to bytes conversion)*.9(atm overhead).

Have you tried running a speed test when your connection is good and bad to see if there's more than just a latency difference? DSL can be extremely finicky and ive had it before where almost on a schedule the line stats would degrade significantly and make the connection bad. Some people's DSL degrades or goes out when it's raining outside. The fact that you can't get anything more than 3mbps must mean you are very far away from the phone CO.

You can also rule out internal wiring issues by plugging your modem into the demarcation point and see if there's any difference. Thre was a massive difference in my last apartment when doing this.

It goes to shit right around 7pm. Last night I was playing q2 pinging 50-60s. 7:15pm it went to 100-140 for the rest of the evening. I jumped and checked a few times before I went to bed.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with Windstream. I have had the for almost 2 years and it has been a nightmare! I can't stand their service and lies. It was so bad that I started a blog about them a while back but got tired of updating it after nothing was being done.

Maybe we can get together and figure out a way to complain enough about them to get them to do something. Where you located?

Hey SH, don't beleive what Windstream tells you. They seem to have lied to me more times than I can count. They tell me that they can't give me the 12Mbps that I pay for, and had for 2 years before Windsteream took over. I have PERFECT service from a local Telco with 12-15Mbps consistently and 1.5Mbps upload. When they came in they started to say that I wasn't in their "12Mbps" range, even though they had just upgraded all the switching/routing equipment when they took over, so why is it slower now?

On top of this lie, they said that it was physically impossible to get those speeds at that distance, which was a lie b/c I had them before.

When a tech was out at my site for the 21st time in 18 months, they had my line on a test port making sure that the line was alright. When I ran a speed test it was 149Mbps/sec down and 9.1Mbps upload!!! That is about 100x faster than the speed they were giving you with DSL (I have DSL too) - so this also invalidated their BS claim about it not being physically possible as well.

There are many more things but it's not worth talking about it. Horrible quality of service!
