KotchY, You don't need a constant connection. If you are on a dial up, you only need to connect once to flush and retreve more packets.

FOr more information, visit the Distributed computing forum. We'll be happy to answer any question (this thead is getting crowded... which is good ;))

Just a friendly bump and a reminder that the TeamAnandtech would love to have each and every one of you join us..Make the Best online foums on the web also the best team on the web, no matter which DC project you choose...:)

P.S. RC5 is a good choice;)

I joined 5 days ago and now my computer runs 24/7:). I know it's not much (k6-2 500), but yeah, every little bit helps... And also having my computer hum here in my dorm room helps me get to sleep, drowns out the background noise. That's why you should join TA, you will sleep better at night.;)

Oh, and everyone be prepared for tomorrow. I got tired of only turning in 272 blocks a day (after one day), so I'm planning the first Jeremy Mega-Flush. Yes, after 4 long days of cracking, I'm going to turn in........ 1000 BLOCKS. Eat that DPC's. Booyah.

I've been crunching near 750 work units on my celeron@450.

I'll be flushing all that work soon. But that probably isn't that large of an amount compared to you punks with 700+mhz cpus

Come one guys, I am helping do my part. I added at least 15 comps this week alone to the cause. Now do your part and get those super souped up rigs of yours cracking on RC5. Why, cause cow tipping is in season. :Q

just recruited a AMD k6-2 450 and a athlon 600 and a p3 800... doing what i can although i've made hundreds of machines... they're all business machines and i suppose they would mind if i walked in tomorrow and put on their servers and cad machines and photoshop machines...

Edit: not to mention my p3 750

wow got more people!

unfortunately, I've found that lots of people with power systems either think that this is annoying, or that they are too worried about leaving it on all the time.. what a bunch of bull, but oh well, you can't force em. we CAN however just get more people who haven't heard of this before to join!

if you want more info JUST ASK! also after you've downloaded the RC-5 program, visit Paulson's website for configuration info.

To those worried about running your comp(s) 24/7. Do Not worry about it!
IMO it is much better to leave a machine running all the time instead of shutting it down and powering it back up each day. Thermal expansion at power-up and contraction at power-off can cause any of several problems over time. I've been able to 'repair' comps simply buy reseating RAM, drive cables and in one case a CPU in machines that get cycled on/off/on/off. True, some older windows OSs seem to need a warm boot every so often to keep the thing going, but if not in use they usually do fine.
My Win98 and NT4 systems have all been crunching RC5 non-stop for about 96 days now with no problems at all. The local power grid is the governing factor around here ;)
I always turn off my monitors though. In rare instance they have been implicated in fires, but its been quite a while since I heard of this happening. I just turn them off to save a little power.
Power consumption is minimal, especially with the monitor and speakers off. I guess my machines use about 40W/hr. Electricity here is $.10 Kwh or about $3.28/mo per machine. That's ~$2.20 more than running only 8/7 instead of 24/7,...big deal. :Q You'll probably save more than that in repair costs.

A lot of folks have already joined in from looking at this thread. We welcome you all!!

Thanks!!

Geoff

Just would like to point out some facts not mentionned it this thread :

1 - To those who stopped cracking a while ago, and came back to it : please make sure to download the most recent clients. They have speed improvements, especially for K7 cores. (cough-Russ-cough)

2 - If you're running K6, K6-2 or K6-3 cores, consider putting them on OGR. Those chips perform much better on that contest, and Team Anandtech has recently been overtaken by the evil /. on this.

3 - If choosing OGR, -DO- use a recent, if not latest version, as OGR stubs crunched by older versions will NOT be counted.

Thank you all for joining the effort.

"In rare instance they have been implicated in fires, but its been quite a while since I heard of this happening."

:-0 you probably scared alot of people by that! hehehe...

yeah he's right about repair costs.. except hard drives, but even then, you can set your drive to power down, so it makes little difference.
