But that responsibility should NOT be the users :) Then we may as well take the feature out because the rating would mean nothing

There is too much potential for abuse with this. Just take a look at Paulson's rating. What if someone wants to sign up several dummy accounts to bolster his rating? What happens to Paulson if he wants to buy or sell something? Just as most members aren't taken seriously if they hide their email address, I can see it happening that traders won't be taken seriously unless they enable the rating.

IMO, we're better off without the rating feature, unless we have the option of seeing what votes were left by what members.

hey reitz - I gave you 10/10, are you happy ;) I think this is an 'interesting' feature, but I do agree that it'll probably be abused in some way, unfortunately :(

Snow patrol, that's exactly my point. You rated me, based on what? You've never traded with me, how do you know that I won't rip you off? The ratings are measuring the popularity of the members, not their reliability when it comes to trading. What good is that?

Edit (again) That's better. :)

It might mean more if there were a minimum number of posts required before you could rate someone and in addition one had to have ratings enabled in order to rate someone else.

If the purpose of the ratings is for the for sale/trade forums then maybe the rating should be labeled for sale/trade rating.

I personally liked the idea of being able to filter messages based on rating. However, I personally don't participate in the sale/trade forums. I would question the usefulness of the ratings for that. There would have to be a way for the forum to determine who bought the item and give them the ability to rate the seller and for the seller to be able to rate the buyer. Ecrap(I am not allowed to refer to it by name?) has the best rating system I have seen for buying/selling. /. has the best moderation system I have seen for a forum. I participate in these forums and not those, so you have my overall opinion of the forums by this statement. :)

Cool feature :). These boards get better and better every day...just one question;

Is it possible for me to sell/trade Dragon Ball and other such material on these boards? If so which board do I post it in? "For sale/trade?" Please let me know if possible, thank you!

Zuni, I still don't see the reason we shouldn't be allowed to change our rating of someone else. For example, if I had met Paulson a year ago, I probably would have given him a 2 or 3. Now that he's joined Team Anandtech, I gave him an 8. If he assimilates more computers than TA Cube, I'd like to be able to give him a 10. If, on the other hand, he spreads a virus over these forums that makes us all crack RC5 for him, I'd like to be able to give him a 1, if you don't give him the boot first.

If there's some technical reason why rating adjustment can't be done (and I can imagine a few) just say so. Otherwise, I'd really like to understand why you don't like the idea.

Edit: Okay, that was interesting. I had rated Paulson before, but I just re-rated him to a 9. Did this have something to do with his former 1 status?

All the ratings (enabled) were reset to -0- earlier today, that's why you could rate him again.

BTW Joshpokeball, I think you'd be OK following Paulson's advice from the other thread. Most items on FS/T are computer/tech related, but I've seen other things there as well. You do need to set a price in advance, etc., and don't over-bump your own thread but otherwise give it a try.

[edit]ha ha, I guess it was the elf icon that had me thinking it was Paulson, it was actually Possessed Freak :D[/edit]
