It seems the DVx00 series doesn't have S-video out. Can someone confirm this? How are you going to transfer the video to VHS tapes then? (newbie at camcorder stuff).

Hey all,

I purchased the Panasonic PV-DV400 back when there was a pricematch with Sears (along with a $100 MIR). Got the camera for around $439 + tax (could have been less if I signed up for the Sears CC for an extra 10% off, but I didn't want to risk it).

Yes, the camera DOES have an S-Video out on it. I've used it a few times to display the camera directly on a 27" TV. Mostly I use the FireWire on it (IEEE-1394). I must say, this camera is pretty sweet! I am completely satisfied with its performance. Even the battery life isn't that bad. I don't think I've ever run out of power. Tapes aren't too bad for it. They use Mini-DV tapes, they run about $10 each (usually packaged 2 for $20 at Best Buy, etc). If you want to save some cash, go to Costco (or another warehouse store). I don't remember the exact price, but there was a considerable savings on the tapes here in IL.

For anyone thinking of getting a DV Cam, get it! For the money, its great! My co-workers and boss in the IT dept here at my college were so impressed by the quality for the price, they had wanted me to get extras for the Art and IT dept. here.....that wasn't in the cards! lol

Anyway, if you want any more info on the camera, feel free to E-Mail me.........but I'd say go for it......I'm happy that I did! :D

Can anyone recommend a good inexpensive firewire card? I just received a 401 for my birthday and want to start playing with it.

Thanks

check staples, staples has that "dlink" firewire card (SKU 443933) which uses same chipset as the expensive Adapatec card. This card are more compatiable with softwares. There is other post about the dazzles se (firewire card as well). I got two from wal-mart for 40 each, but can not get either one of them to work. I am not saying that the dazzles SE are not good, I just can get the card to work (not detected when boot up win98, this card suppose to be PNP).

Just my .02

For the digital camcorder. check Sears, Sears are clear out the older model of Digital cam, I got mine Sony TRV520 (S-video, night shot, laser link, remote, analog sigal input....)about 500+tax.

Go to www.newegg.com.

Type in firewire in the search box.

Get the one for $22.

FireWire IEEE 1394 Controller Card( KW-582V2 ), 3+1(2 independent external ports + 1 internal/external shared port) with cable & Video Editing Software Retail Version for PCI Slot. Model #: IOFLEX-FW4 Fedex Saver Shipping $7.00

The other one for $20 has a single VIA chip solution. This $22 one looks like it uses the TI chipset, which many say is better.

The PV-DV600 has ANALOG IN which allows you to convert analog tapes (VHS, etc) to MiniDV. Looks like these are still about $900, though. I have a PV-DV100 (cheapest model) and I bought a DVMC-DA2 FIREWIRE CONVERTER which allows me to basically do the same thing. About $300 and it doesn't tie up your PC. Another option is the Dazzle Hollywood Bridge, but every Dazzle product I've owned has been CRAP (Dazzle 1 USB, Dazzle 2 MPG2 encoder)...and I've heard of problems with the Hollywood Bridge. It is cheaper than the Sony, but I won't buy another Dazzle device.

Anyway, this analog-to-DV box is nice if you plan on doing any high-quality archiving.

Epinephrine, did you get this from Sears B&M or from Sears.com? I didn't know you can pricematch Sears B&M with online store.

Anyone want to recommend a good bag for this thing as well? The one that came with the accessory package was a bit disappointing.

Thanks.

Well I think the absolute cheapest available for this thing would be from beachcamera.com, which has it for $544 + 24.95 for FedEx Saver shipping (also in-stock). Minus the $100 rebate it is $468.95. I've heard good things about beachcamera.com from other people so it's most likely safe to order from there.
