No one really hyped up the 580. It was what it was - a simple refresh. On the other hand, rumours of HD6870 > HD5870 and HD6970 being 20-40% faster created so much hype - this is why I think OCGuy is disappointed over all that hype for months and months.

The 580 was a simple re-spin though that got NV higher clocks and 15-20% performance increase. Given that this is a brand new architecture, I am sure some were hoping for 6970 > 580, or for this card to come with 1920 SPs, etc. Also, this is AMD's 8th generation tessellation engine and it seems they are still not up to speed with NV's 1st generation; and from a geometry throughput, AMD is still behind. Personally, I always thought this 40nm "refresh" generation was going to be meh performance wise (which is why I always upgrade between full generations not through refreshes). At least AMD is putting more price pressure on NV, which is great!

If the "new architecture" 6970 does not beat the 580, that does seem to back up his excitement.

Otherwise the 6970 will be boring. If you want a slower card that is cheaper you can already buy a 570.

I hear you on this, both launches have have turned out to be underwhelming. I was expecting more from AMD with these cards, these are a disappointment from an apex performance view, but look good on price/performance, but that seems to always be the guarantee now with AMD.

I poohed poohed on the 580 launch as well, the only good thing to come out of that launch was decent thermals and noise to go along with 480 performance. My overclocked 480s are faster than 580s, and it looks like the 6970 is doing nothing to introduce a bar raise to new, previously unattainable performance levels as well.

Looking forward to AT's review and the real dice on just how new an architecture these cards are in relation to how they were purported to be.

HD6970 will win in F1 2010, BF:BC2, Crysis Warhead, lose in games with heavy tessellation/DX11 games like Lost Planet 2, Metro 2033, Hawx 2 and Dirt 2.

I am going with average performance at 1920x1200 4AA: 580 > 6970 > 570 > 6950 > 470. I think HD6970 may have a slight advantage at 2560x1600 8AA.

AMD will undercut the pricing of both the 580 and 570 but be within 5-10% of them. HD6950 will be a great overclocker just like the HD6850 is, making it the new price/performance king of all videocards out (unless of course NV decides to lower prices). That's my prediction.

I am interested to see if AMD will drop prices on HD6850/70 cards.

I have to go with 1920x 1200 that native on all 4 of my monitors.
I will remove Hawk 2 and LP. in the averages. But to be fair on the 580 most used the highest res . for averages. So I will likely use that . But never play at that res . I hate 30in monitors . 26 in . I like. Got new system all put together today with the new case. I believe My daughter has it sold for outragious price . Guy wants to compare reviews against it befor handing over the cash. I told him its not apples to apples as the SB is at 5 GHZ. and the 6970 is at 950MGz. Bob got the water block completed for the 6970 late last night . Been a busy day.

I haven't done it LOOKED . But when the 480 was reviewed hasn't there been any driver improvements since than . I think drivers are going to be hugh factor . The New ones are already and there not that good. But with 28nm along ways off these cards are going to be around for awhile.If all goes well tomorrow I going to come out of this thing with hugh profits.

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying here if you could clarify. But if you're referring to the 580/570 seeing improvements with drivers, I don't see that happening. The 580/570 are just a 480/480 512 shader, I don't think there is anything drivers can do for those cards they haven't already done for the 470/480.

If you're talking about the 6950/6970, I think we need to see in the better reviews just how different these cards are from the 5XXX series to know if drivers will change the game for them.

You did enjoy 480 SLI performance for months now 🙂 Good thing no one had the balls to bet you $100 on HD6970 > GTX580. I can't see you upgrading from GTX480s just yet unless we are talking HD6990 in CF hhee

The slow pace of performance improvement probably has a lot to do with TSMC. If 32nm was a go, the GTX580 and 69xx might be a little more impressive.

Ya my wife said your crazy making that wager. I told her cold feet is always a tale in poker. I was referring to bet that another member backed away from . On the 6970

Back at wreckage . I was talking about the 480 release . Haven't the scores for the 480 gone up since release . I don't look real hard at NV hardware so I haven't comparred the release 480 drivers to latest NV drivers.

No because AMD had the 5970 comming along to smash it...nVidia still hasn't confirmed that they are working on a GTX 595. The 6990 is also comming to smash...the 5970 I guess.

I have to concur here, single-gpu cards are what impress me most. Dual-gpu cards are great and performance crown is awesome to have but I like the ultra-fast single-gpu cards.

5870 was an awesome launch and GTX 480 was not much so in my book because it was not much faster than the 5870. The same will repeat again with 28nm cards. You can bet a solid $100 😉 that NV is going to do their best to not get beaten to the punch again on 28nm.

It looks like the best thing AMD or NV can do for sales or momentum is be first to market with new cards on a new process, 5870 was great evidence of that.

None of this is to say 6970/6950 are crap. Once again AMD will give stellar performance much cheaper than NV, and force NV to cut their prices and profits. Just would of been nice if they didn't wimp out and just put out a monster die 6970 beast. I guess it has something to do with their business model that they prefer to hit the top-tier bracket with dual-gpu cards.

AMD may very well likely retain the crown with the 6990, we may not see a dual-gpu from NV if they can only manage to put two 560s on a card, it will likely not be faster than a 6990 and not worth releasing. AMD's strategy may have found a loophole in NV's monster-die approach where they can put out a dual-gpu card that can out perform NV's best and NV cannot counter due to their monster dies.

I would take a single GPU that gives x performance over a dual GPU that gives equal performance. But I'm not the one claiming a card has to be faster than an earlier card to not be 'boring'.

The 4870 was slower than the GTX280 but had an awesome price to performance ratio. It chopped the price of the GTX280 almost in half overnight and caused Nvidia to reconfigure the GTX260.

The 5870 was a few percent slower than the GTX295. But it ushered in DX11 and was a very popular card.

Will the 6970 be similar or be a let down? I have a feeling it won't be a 'boring' card regardless.
