The GTX580 *might* be Nvidia's highest end part (unless they do make a dual GF114 part). On the other hand we all know that the 6970 will be the second fastest AMD card.

But if nV can manage two chips on one PCB, they may take back the single-card crown.

Isn't the 6970 going to come with dual bios? I imagine that is what that switch is. Rather than depend on software to OC the gpu, offer an easier way to flash the bios and up the clocks from there, and maybe some shaders too, to enable a performance increase, and if things go wrong, just flip the switch back and clear the settings.

Maybe AMD couldn't ship the card like they wanted to by default, so rather than just give up the settings, offer customers a way to enable it themselves (with some sort of prior warning about stability and power usage before doing so reliquishing them of the responsibility of supporting it if things go wrong).

I thought the other bios fixes cold booting for extreme cooling and overclocking or something.

580 faster than 6970, 6970 close but still 2nd place, 570 behind it, and 6950 behind it

6970 at $400 launch, 6950 at $300 launch

6970 will suck at synthetics compared to the 580/570, but will be higher in gaming - so if you split the average into synthetics vs. games, you could see a difference

edit: also drivers tested will not be 8.790 in all likelihood

HD6970 will win in F1 2010, BF:BC2, Crysis Warhead, lose in games with heavy tessellation/DX11 games like Lost Planet 2, Metro 2033, Hawx 2 and Dirt 2.

I am going with average performance at 1920x1200 4AA: 580 > 6970 > 570 > 6950 > 470. I think HD6970 may have a slight advantage at 2560x1600 8AA.

AMD will undercut the pricing of both the 580 and 570 but be within 5-10% of them. HD6950 will be a great overclocker just like the HD6850 is, making it the new price/performance king of all videocards out (unless of course NV decides to lower prices). That's my prediction.

I am interested to see if AMD will drop prices on HD6850/70 cards.

HD6970 $369

Card disappoints me in not being faster than a 580. It was not a huge leap to make for AMD, but looks like AMD prefers to make smaller more efficient dies than nvidia and hold the performance crown with their dual-gpu cards. Kind of disappointing. These new cards only look to beat the 580 in 3 monitor gaming which is very niche.

The cards are cheap though and are going to force heavy NV price cuts on the 580 most likely.

Looking forward to seeing 6970 Tri & Quad Crossfire, 6990/6970 Tri Crossfire, and 6990x2 Quad Crossfire. If pricing is right they may be nice for the high end and outperform 580 Tri-SLI. About the only thing I see being a worthy upgrade until 28nm cards from 480SLI is some sort of Quadfire of AMD's cards, that or pickup another 480 for $200, but then I'd need a new powersupply :/

I just switched from an ATi laptop to an Nvidia laptop and it's... :|... the same...

I guess it has driver-based AO options that give better performance than game-based ones... but honestly, that's really the only difference... and I'd trade that for MorphAA anyday tbh.

If you actually look at the numbers AMD has taken the lead with laptop market share. Heat & cost are two big factors with that. AMD's market share is only going to grow when their APUs land.
 
This launch is slightly less boring than the 6870. Performance that you could obtain by overclocking a 480 months ago...

I know that. I was just talking about how very much alike the two companies are in terms of user experience. It's the same, I wouldn't even notice if it wasn't for the fact that it says Nvidia instead of ATi when I right-click my desktop.

And for the record, my 445m idle and load temps are the same as my old M5730's temps, so I don't see why the temp argument comes from. I mean, we just started getting fermi-based mobility GPUs a little while ago (which is sad, really)... so I don't see why it's been around for so long.

If HD6970 is ~ $370-400, and delivers performance > GTX480, we just got a card which is $100+ cheaper, quieter, cooler and consumes less power. That's actually pretty good. $229-250 HD6870, on the other hand, was a total failure in light of $185-200 factory pre-overclocked GTX460s. NV really needs GTX560 because the gap between a $230-240 GTX470 and $350 GTX570 is too large.

The rumours of HD6970 being 30-40% faster than GTX580 and even more outrageous claims of "R300 vs. 5800" like 2x performance increase over 580 in DX11 made this launch exciting!!
