While that's cool and all, has anyone thought about the collateral damage of a laser weapon when it misses its target?

you mean the air might get wounded?

If it's pointing towards the ground, it's no different from bullets.

considering that the laser would dissipate as it loses energy (same for bullets), i dont think it'd be that much of an issue.

on another note, would the laser pierce the target or would it just hit the target and stop right there?

I guess that makes sense.

My knowledge of lasers comes entirely from "Real Genius", so my perception might be a little skewed.

Compared to a missile? Surely you jest?

A small hole, randomly somewhere below, vs a missile?

It would be similiar to a bullet missing the target (which is what they do ALL the time)

No  I just responded to your first post before reading through the entire thread... If I wait until the end, and then scroll back and respond to each post, I end up with 5 posts clumped together at the bottom... thats if I can find the original post I wanted to reply to

remember, thanks to the international ban on laser weapons (of which the US is signatory too IIRC) we'll never have laser hand weapons...

Incorrect, AFAIK, the ban is on weapons meant to blind. If the weapon is meant to KILL, it's okay.

yeah...but think of the potential blindness from light scatter/reflections?

EDIT: added to which a laser powerful enough to kill instantly, rather than blind/disfigure is unlikely to ever be an infantry weapon...
I haven't read the text, but most intl. weapons limits have to do with intent to injure (like a dum-dum round). You can blind someone with a bullet too...

i really can't fully recall , i know that indiscriminate weapons are a big no-no (landmines, chemical weapons), but as far as i see it, they are VERY unlikely to develop an infantry weapon that would be powerful enough to kill immediately, and if they can't attain that level of power then it would most certainly be a cruel and inhumane weapon (afaik flamethrowers are banned too), and thus very likely to fall under the existing ban...

Yeah, like what's the range of these things? If you miss, does the beam keep going..and going...and going..?

and weakening and defocusing...and weakening and defocusing...and weakening and defocusing...

yeah, it does.

Depends entirely on the frequency the laser emits.

The real question is, will the enemy be required to wear a special chest plate so he will know when he was hit? Will he have to put his gun over his head and call dead?

I've already got a light saber, now I'm looking for a medium saber.

No - I bet that out of the entire military and contractor base involved in this multi-billion dollar project spanning decades of research, not one single person has thought about what would happen if they "missed."

I'd assume it would actually pierce the target. If it just hits the target and stops, then the military might as well mount big laser pointers to their planes.

This is already in process! Dr. Allen and Dr. Parson have been working on the "Allen Parson's Project" for years!
