what is the difference between sleep, stand by, and hibernate? furthermore, my new 700m only shows the standby option so far...and iguess that when iclose the lid, it goes into stand by mode.
i dont care about battery usage (and its minimal at that)... in which mode is the harddrive shut down and "locked" so that it wont be damaged by transportation?
Sleep = display off, hard drive parked, computer still on and ready to use again in seconds
Standby = Sleep
Hibernate = Copies system state (all open windows, program status, memory contents) to hard drive, shuts down computer completely. On power-up it will resume your computer at the same place you left it, just like it was in standby.
My Thinkpad is almost always attached to the dock. Most of the time I have a torrent running so the display is off but the laptop is on. If I'm not using it for a few hours, I'll put it on standby. I don't really use hibernate, and I haven't turned it off in a couple weeks.
