never owned a laptop so i dont know the procedure and exactly what the different modes are

if you go sleep at night.. what do you leave the laptop on?
when you intend to carry it around.. do you shut it off first or simply shut the lid?
etc

sleep at night : standby or keep on (take battery out and plug in AC adapter)

carry around : hibernate or shut down ... depends ... usually the latter

Mine's always in hibernate, at least for now. Noticing that it seems to fvck up the drivers for my flash media reader, though, so I may have to change to shutdown.

At night: I just leave it on like a PC.
Carrying it: I shut it down first.

what is the difference between sleep, stand by, and hibernate? furthermore, my new 700m only shows the standby option so far...and iguess that when iclose the lid, it goes into stand by mode.

i dont care about battery usage (and its minimal at that)... in which mode is the harddrive shut down and "locked" so that it wont be damaged by transportation?

i leave it on like a PC all the time, since if i put it in hibernate or standby, it would disconnect my AIM session. i've used my laptops like this since 1999 with no problems.

and i almost always use it plugged in. if i travel, i turn it off when not in use.

Always on or in standby. The thing would stay in standby for weeks before the battery died.

what's the rationale for this?

a dumbass Future Shop salesman tried to convince my mom that not doing so would actually reduce battery efficiency, and tried to back it up by saying his battery lasts only something like 10 minutes now.

it's NOT true.

Hibernate whenever I'm not using my laptop and I turn LCD off whenever I am using my laptop and want to conserve the battery.

Sleep = display off, hard drive parked, computer still on and ready to use again in seconds

Standby = Sleep

Hibernate = Copies system state (all open windows, program status, memory contents) to hard drive, shuts down computer completely. On power-up it will resume your computer at the same place you left it, just like it was in standby.

My Thinkpad is almost always attached to the dock. Most of the time I have a torrent running so the display is off but the laptop is on. If I'm not using it for a few hours, I'll put it on standby. I don't really use hibernate, and I haven't turned it off in a couple weeks.
